04NSE Gainers and Losers

The Nairobi Securities Exchange does not offer a stable public data feed we can refresh automatically, so we do not show prices here rather than risk stale or wrong numbers. See the day's top gainers, losers and movers on the NSE website, and read our market news for weekly summaries.

How to Read These Numbers

Central Bank Rate (CBR). This is the benchmark rate set by the Central Bank of Kenya’s Monetary Policy Committee, which usually meets every two months. When the CBR falls, banks are expected to lower loan rates over time, and returns on savings products such as money market funds and Treasury bills tend to drift down too. When it rises, borrowing gets more expensive. The CBK discount window rate is what banks pay to borrow overnight from the CBK and sits above the CBR.

KESONIA. The Kenya Shilling Overnight Interbank Average is the average rate banks charge each other for overnight loans. The CBK has been moving loan pricing towards it, so it is worth watching if you have a variable-rate loan.

91-day Treasury bill. The government borrows by selling Treasury bills every week, and anyone can buy them through the CBK’s DhowCSD platform. The 91-day rate is a good guide to what safe short-term savings can earn. Remember that interest on Treasury bills is subject to withholding tax, so compare after-tax returns with other options.

Inflation. The inflation rate shows how fast prices are rising compared with a year earlier, using data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. If your savings earn less than inflation after tax, they are losing buying power.

Lending, deposit and savings rates. These are the average rates charged and paid by commercial banks, published monthly. The gap between lending and deposit rates shows how much banks earn on the money they take in and lend out.

Pump prices. EPRA sets the maximum retail prices for super petrol, diesel and kerosene every month, for a cycle that runs from the 15th to the 14th of the next month. Prices differ by town mainly because of transport costs from Mombasa. Diesel prices feed into matatu fares and food prices, which is why fuel reviews often move inflation a month or two later.

Money market fund yields. These are the yields fund managers publish on their own sites, usually as an effective annual yield before withholding tax. They change daily and depend on the interest rates above, so a falling CBR usually means falling yields. Compare funds on fees and size as well as yield.

Where the Data Comes From

Interest rates and inflation come from the key rates panel on the Central Bank of Kenya website. Fuel prices come from the fuel price index on the EPRA website. Fund yields come from each fund manager’s website. If an official site is down when we check, the page keeps the last good figures and says so, rather than showing a guess. We do not show NSE share prices, because there is no stable public feed we can refresh reliably.
