Under the Kenya Defence Forces Act, the Defence Council sets the salaries of service members on the advice of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. This page sets out monthly pay by rank for the Kenya Army, explains what drives the differences within each rank, and includes a take-home pay calculator already set to each figure.

KDF Salary by Rank (Kenya Army)

The table shows monthly pay by rank in the Kenya Army as reported in August 2026. Most ranks are given as a range rather than a single figure.

Rank Reported monthly pay (KES)
Cadet (in training) 7,172
Private 19,941 to 30,000
Lance Corporal 26,509 to 50,000
Corporal 32,250 to 70,000
Captain 73,182 to 110,000
Major 102,106 to 150,000
Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel 130,735 to 180,000
Brigadier 153,317 to 300,000
Lieutenant General 632,984 to 800,000
General 894,897 to 1,200,000, plus KES 336,000 in allowances

Figures as reported by Tuko in August 2026; official KDF pay scales are not published.

What Affects KDF Pay

The report does not say whether each range is basic salary alone or basic salary plus allowances, and the very wide ranges for some ranks suggest that both are mixed together. The same report gives the entry pay for a leading aircraftman in the Kenya Air Force and a junior seaman in the Kenya Navy as KES 19,941, the same as the bottom of the range for an army private.

Press reports also say that pay within a rank varies with education level and years of service, which would explain part of the spread. A KDF payslip is the only reliable source for an individual soldier’s figures.

KDF Take-Home Pay Calculator

Choose a reported figure to load it, or enter the gross pay from your own payslip. The calculator deducts NSSF, SHIF at 2.75%, the Affordable Housing Levy at 1.5% and PAYE after personal relief, and treats the whole amount as taxable.

Uniformed services have their own pension and benefit arrangements, and some allowances may be treated differently for tax. If your payslip shows different deductions, use those figures. Results here are an estimate only. Service members who save with the defence Sacco can price a loan on the Defence Sacco loan calculator, and the check-off loan calculator shows how much of your pay can go to loan repayments.

Joining the KDF

The KDF recruits through advertised recruitment drives, for categories such as general duty recruits, tradesmen and women, specialist officers and cadets. Each advert sets out the age, height, grade and document requirements, so read it in full before you report to a recruitment centre. Recruitment notices and other government vacancies appear on jobinkenya.co.ke, and the guide on documents required for jobs in Kenya lists the papers most recruiters ask for.

How KDF Pay Compares

For comparison, the National Police Service did publish its pay grades during its 2024 to 2026 review; see police salary in Kenya. Civil servants’ pay by job group is on civil servant salary in Kenya, and state officers’ pay is on public salaries in Kenya.
