The manufacturers in more detail

Paperbags Limited

Paperbags Limited makes three khaki grocery bag ranges. The Mafuco brand is its classic khaki or brown bag, which the company says was nostalgically called the “sugar bag” because shops once used it to pack small quantities of sugar. The Eco brand is made from 100% recycled paper, and the Duro brand uses 70gsm paper, comes in 10kg bundles and is aimed at cost-conscious buyers. Plain bags are available, and printed or branded bags are made subject to minimum quantities. Special sizes can be made on request. The factory is at No. 1 Gilgil Road in Industrial Area, Nairobi.

Bags and Balers Manufacturers (K) Ltd

Bags and Balers says it has more than 25 years in the packaging industry and supplies clients across East Africa. Its range includes grocery or khaki bags, printed khaki bags made from food-grade brown or white paper, millinery bags for pharmacies, bakeries and cafes, medical packets, flour packets and heavy-duty balers. It offers custom branding and says it runs a quality management system to the ISO 9001 standard. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm.

Dune Packaging

Dune Packaging has been in the paper packaging business since 2000 and operates a six-acre factory in Thika with German printing and bag-making machinery. It makes khaki grocery bags under the Dune, Tiger, Chui and Ndovu brands, as well as custom printed paper bags, flour, sugar and baking powder bags, tea sacks, seed bags, stitched bags, takeaway bags for restaurants and branded wrapping paper. It also offers design, printing and delivery.

Why khaki bags became so common in Kenya

Through Gazette Notice No. 2356 of 28 February 2017, the Environment Cabinet Secretary banned the use, manufacture and import of plastic carrier bags and flat bags for commercial and household packaging. The ban took effect on 28 August 2017 after a six-month grace period. NEMA says offenders face a fine of KSh 2 million to KSh 4 million, imprisonment of one to four years, or both. Paper bags, along with cloth, sisal, canvas and other reusable bags, became the main alternatives, which is why khaki bags are now standard at kiosks, butcheries, chemists and supermarkets.

How to choose a paper bag supplier

  • Size and strength: ask for the bag sizes and the paper weight (gsm). Heavier paper holds more weight and tears less.
  • Plain or branded: printed bags advertise your shop, but manufacturers usually set minimum order quantities.
  • Food safety: for bread, takeaway food and medicine, ask for food-grade or greaseproof paper.
  • Recycled content: recycled paper bags such as Paperbags Limited’s Eco range suit businesses marketing an eco-friendly image.
  • Delivery: confirm whether the price includes delivery to your town and how long orders take.
  • Payment: pay to a company till, paybill or bank account, and get an invoice.

Buying from wholesalers instead

Small shops that need only a few bundles often buy from packaging wholesalers in town centres rather than directly from factories. Factories are usually cheaper per piece for large orders, while wholesalers are more convenient for small, frequent purchases.

Starting a paper bag business

Some entrepreneurs distribute khaki bags to kiosks and shops or make simple bags by hand.
