Clinical medicine vs nursing in Kenya: at KMTC both diplomas need a KCSE mean grade of C (plain) with C in English or Kiswahili and Biology, both take three years and both cost government-sponsored students about KSh 238,200 in fees. The big difference is the job: clinical officers diagnose and treat patients, while nurses deliver and manage nursing care, and clinical officers start on a higher county grade (Job Group J against H for diploma nurses). Under their 2026 collective bargaining agreement with county governments, the lowest-paid clinical officer earns KSh 105,900 a month in total pay in a rural area. Here is the full comparison for diplomas and degrees.
Updated November 2026. Entry grades and fees from KMTC’s September 2026 intake requirements; university requirements from KUCCPS; salary scales from county vacancy notices (Narok, July 2025) and the 2026 clinical officers’ CBA as reported. Check your admission letter and the latest county adverts.

Government-sponsored KMTC students placed through KUCCPS pay about KSh 43,200 in Semester 1 (including one-off registration charges), KSh 39,000 in Semester 2 and KSh 78,000 a year in Years 2 and 3, about KSh 238,200 for either diploma. Clinical officers’ pay rose sharply after the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers and the Council of Governors signed the cadre’s first CBA in February 2026, effective 1 July 2025 to June 2029. Reports put the lowest total monthly pay at KSh 105,900 (rural) and KSh 110,900 (urban). Nurses employed by the Ministry of Health are covered by a separate CBA signed in August 2024, and county nurses’ allowances vary by county. Which should you choose?
- Choose clinical medicine if you want to diagnose and treat, run clinics, and enter at a higher county job group with a diploma.
- Choose nursing if you want hands-on patient care, midwifery or community health, and the widest range of posts: nurses are the largest health cadre and work in every ward and facility.
- Thinking of working abroad? Nursing has the clearest international routes, because many countries recruit registered nurses; clinical officer is a mostly African cadre with fewer foreign equivalents.
- Same entry grades, same KMTC fees: the decision rests on the work you want, not on cost.
