How to Reverse an M-Pesa Transaction (2026): Everything You Need to Know

To reverse an M-Pesa transaction, forward the confirmation SMS to 456 within 24 hours. The service works for Safaricom-to-Safaricom transfers. You can also start a reversal from the M-Pesa app, the mySafaricom app, or Safaricom’s Zuri chatbot.

Who Can Request a Reversal

Only the sender or the recipient can request it. The request must be made within 24 hours. It applies to person-to-person transfers between Safaricom numbers. Airtime bought for your own number can also be reversed through 456.

Paybill and Till payments follow a different process and are not covered by the automatic 456 service.

What to Do First

Keep the original M-Pesa confirmation SMS. You will need the transaction code. Forward the full message to 456 as soon as possible and note the recipient’s number, the amount, and the time.

Four Ways to Reverse a Transaction

1. Forward the SMS to 456

This works on any phone and needs no data.

  1. Open the confirmation SMS for the transaction.
  2. Forward the entire message to 456.
  3. The system checks that you are the sender or recipient, that you are within 24 hours, that the recipient’s balance can cover the reversal, and that the number is not blocked from reversals.
  4. You receive an SMS from “Reversal” confirming whether the request was accepted. Safaricom aims to give an update within 2 hours.

You can try up to 3 times per transaction.

2. Using the M-Pesa app

This only works for transactions you made in the app, and only shortly after you make them.

  1. Right after the transaction, tap the reverse option.
  2. Select the reason (wrong amount or wrong recipient).
  3. The request is submitted immediately. You get a notice within about 2 minutes, followed by an update within 2 hours.

3. Using the mySafaricom app

The same rules apply: the transaction must have been made in that app.

  1. After the transaction, tap the reverse option.
  2. Confirm the request.
  3. You receive confirmation that it was received, with follow-up within 2 hours.

4. Using Zuri on WhatsApp

  1. Save 0722 000 100 and send “Hello” on WhatsApp.
  2. Choose M-PESA Help and Reversal, then Reverse.
  3. Enter the transaction code or paste the SMS.
  4. Confirm your number and enter your M-Pesa PIN.
  5. You get a notice that the request was received. The recipient is contacted for consent.

Zuri also works on Telegram and Facebook Messenger.

How Long It Takes

StageExpected time
Deadline to request via 45624 hours from the transaction
Request acknowledged (apps)Within 2 minutes
Reversal started noticeWithin seconds
Update on the resultWithin 2 hours

There is no fixed completion time beyond the 2-hour update. The process depends on the recipient’s response.

If the Reversal Fails

Common reasons include the request arriving after 24 hours, the recipient having already spent the money, or the number being blocked from reversals.

Check the SMS from “Reversal” for the outcome. If the recipient declines, they can later forward a message to 456 if they change their mind. You can try again (up to 3 attempts). If it still fails, call 100 (prepaid) or 200 (postpaid) with the transaction code, recipient number, amount, and reason.

If the recipient refuses to return the money, report the matter to the police and obtain an Occurrence Book number before taking further steps. Safaricom cannot force a reversal without the recipient’s agreement.

Reversing Paybill or Till Payments

The 456 service does not cover these. Contact Safaricom customer care with your transaction code. The business that received the payment must also cooperate, as the money may already have been credited to an account.

Always check the Hakikisha confirmation screen before paying. It shows the business name, paybill or till number, account number (where applicable), amount, and cost.

Avoiding the Need for a Reversal

Read the recipient’s name carefully on the final confirmation screen before you enter your PIN. This step appears on the app, SIM toolkit, and *334#. Double-check the phone number as well.

Scam Warning

If someone calls or texts saying they sent you money by mistake and asks you to send it back, do not do so before checking your actual balance. Safaricom only contacts customers from 0722 000 000. Report suspected fraud to 333 or through Zuri.

Common Questions

Is reversing free?
Yes. There is no charge for the 456 reversal service.

Can I reverse after 24 hours?
Not through the automatic service. Call customer care after that. The recipient’s consent becomes even more important.

Can the recipient also request a reversal?
Yes. Either party can forward the SMS to 456 within 24 hours.

What if the recipient does not respond?
The process can stall. At that point, a police report with an OB number is the usual next step.

That covers the main ways to reverse an M-Pesa transaction in 2026. Act within 24 hours, keep the confirmation SMS, and always verify the name and number on the screen before confirming any payment.
