One of the main reasons people choose Ziidi over other money market funds is how quickly you can get your money back. Withdrawals go straight to your M-Pesa wallet, they are free, and you can make them at any time of day. This guide walks you through the withdrawal steps, the limits that apply, what to do with locked funds and how to close the account completely.

How Ziidi Withdrawals Work

When you withdraw, the fund sells the units that represent your money and sends the cash to the M-Pesa line linked to your Ziidi account. Because Ziidi is built into M-Pesa, you do not need a bank account, and you do not fill any forms. Many traditional money market funds take one to three working days to pay out to a bank account. With Ziidi the money normally lands in M-Pesa within moments.

How to Withdraw on the M-Pesa App

  1. Open the M-Pesa app and log in.
  2. Go to the Ziidi section under financial services.
  3. Select Withdraw.
  4. Enter the amount. The minimum is KSh 10.
  5. Confirm with your M-Pesa PIN.
  6. You receive an SMS, and the money shows in your M-Pesa balance.

How to Withdraw on *334#

  2. Choose Ziidi.
  3. Select Withdraw and enter the amount.

The withdrawal from Ziidi to M-Pesa is free. However, once the money is in M-Pesa, the normal charges apply if you then send it to someone or take cash at an agent. Check our guide to M-Pesa withdrawal charges before cashing out large amounts.

Withdrawing Locked Funds

Ziidi lets you lock part of your balance so that you do not spend it by accident. Locked money cannot be withdrawn until you unlock it. To get it out, go to the Ziidi menu, choose the unlock option, confirm with your PIN, and then withdraw as normal. Locking and unlocking are free. If you locked money as part of a savings goal, think twice before unlocking, because the whole point of the lock is to protect that goal.

How to Close Your Ziidi Account

  1. Unlock any locked funds.
  2. Open the Ziidi menu and choose the option to withdraw and close.
  3. Confirm with your PIN.
  4. Your full balance, including interest earned, goes to M-Pesa and the account is closed.

You can open a new Ziidi account later if you change your mind.

When to Withdraw

Interest on Ziidi is calculated daily, so there is no penalty for withdrawing at any point. You simply stop earning on the amount you take out. If you only need part of your savings, withdraw that amount and leave the rest growing. Avoid moving money in and out repeatedly for no reason. It does not cost you a fee, but money takes about a day to start earning again after each new deposit.

Using Withdrawals to Budget

A simple habit many Ziidi users follow is to keep most of their money in the fund and withdraw only what they need for the week. Because withdrawals are instant and free, there is little reason to hold a large M-Pesa balance that earns nothing. This also helps with self control, since money that sits in the fund is one step away from impulse spending.

Problems and Fixes

The withdrawal failed. Check whether the amount is above your available balance, whether part of it is locked, and whether you have already moved KSh 500,000 that day.

The money has not reached M-Pesa. Wait a few minutes and check your M-Pesa statement. If it still has not arrived, call Safaricom customer care on 100 or 200 with the transaction time and amount.

My M-Pesa wallet is near its limit. M-Pesa has a maximum wallet balance. If a withdrawal would push you over it, the transaction can fail. Withdraw a smaller amount.
