Nairobi’s SHA Facilities at a Glance

Unlike most counties, Nairobi’s SHA network is mostly private. Of the 762 facilities, 555 are private, 117 are run by the county government, 50 are faith-based and 9 are national government hospitals. That means you have plenty of choice, but it also means you should confirm which SHA services each private facility offers before treatment.

  • Level 6 hospitals: 14, including Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital and the National Police Service Referral Hospital, plus private and faith-based hospitals such as The Nairobi Hospital, The Aga Khan University Hospital, MP Shah Hospital, The Mater Hospital, Nairobi West Hospital, The Karen Hospital, The Nairobi South Hospital and Coptic Hospital on Ngong Road.
  • Level 5 hospitals: 27, among them the county’s Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital, Mbagathi County Referral Hospital and Pumwani Maternity and Referral Hospital, as well as private and mission hospitals across the city.
  • Level 4 and 4B: 129 hospitals and specialist clinics.
  • Level 2 and 3: 592 dispensaries, clinics and health centres for everyday outpatient care.

Where the Facilities Are

Embakasi has the most contracted facilities with 190, followed by Kasarani (122), Starehe (82), Dagoretti (81) and Westlands (67). Lang’ata, Kibra and Kamukunji each have about 50, while Makadara and Mathare have about 30 each. If you live in the eastern estates, use the Embakasi or Kasarani filter to see the long list of nearby options.

Specialist Services

The Nairobi list includes 23 specialist medical or dental clinics, 14 dental clinics, 12 eye clinics, 9 mental health and rehabilitation centres, 5 maternity homes, 5 stand-alone dialysis centres and a specialist cancer centre. Larger hospitals also run dialysis, maternity and cancer units, so search the hospitals too.

County-Run Hospitals by Area

Nairobi City County’s own hospitals on the SHA list, for anyone who wants a public option close to home:

  • Embakasi: Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital (both Level 5), plus Kayole II, Njenga and Tassia Kwa Ndege hospitals.
  • Kibra: Mbagathi County Referral Hospital (Level 5) and Kianda 42 Hospital.
  • Kamukunji: Pumwani Maternity and Referral Hospital (Level 5).
  • Makadara: Makadara Hospital and Bahati Hospital.
  • Kasarani: Njiru Hospital. Mathare: Mathare North Hospital. Dagoretti: Dagoretti Sub-County Hospital at Mutuini. Westlands: Westlands Hospital.

Tips for Using SHA in Nairobi

  • Start at a Level 2 or 3 facility for routine care. Higher-level hospitals generally expect a referral for non-emergency specialist care.
  • In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital. Emergency treatment does not need a referral.
  • Check your SHA status on *147# before you go, and carry your ID.

See all counties on our SHA accredited hospitals finder, or check the Kiambu list for Thika, Ruiru and Kikuyu.

Nairobi’s county hospitals collected KSh 2.87 billion in 2025/26, more than double the target. See the Nairobi County budget page for how the county raises and spends its money.
