What “SHA Accredited” Means
People often say a hospital is “SHA accredited”. The official term is contracted: the facility has signed a contract with the Social Health Authority to treat members and claim from SHA’s funds. Every facility in the finder appears on SHA’s published list of contracted facilities. The list shows each facility’s registration number, type, level, county, sub-county, regulator and ownership, and that is what we display.
A contract does not mean every service is covered at every facility. What SHA pays for depends on the benefit package and the level of the facility. Primary care at Level 2 and 3 facilities falls under the Primary Healthcare Fund, while admissions, surgery and specialist care at higher levels fall under the Social Health Insurance Fund and the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund. Before treatment, ask the facility which SHA services it offers and whether you need a referral.
Facility Levels Explained
- Level 2: dispensaries and medical clinics. Outpatient care, basic treatment and referrals. There are 5,731 Level 2 facilities on the list, more than half of the total.
- Level 3 (3A and 3B): health centres and larger clinics, often with maternity and laboratory services. 3,802 facilities.
- Level 4 (4 and 4B): sub-county and other primary hospitals with inpatient wards and surgery. 1,001 facilities.
- Level 5: county referral and large private and faith-based hospitals with specialists. 108 facilities.
- Level 6 (6A and 6B): national referral and teaching hospitals and the largest specialist hospitals. 18 facilities.
Who Runs the Facilities
About 55% of contracted facilities (5,847) are run by county governments, 3,828 are private and 520 are faith-based, with smaller numbers run by NGOs, communities and national government. Most are regulated by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, while 403 clinics are regulated by the Clinical Officers Council. Use the finder’s type filter to narrow the list to dental clinics, eye clinics, maternity homes, stand-alone dialysis centres, cancer centres or mental health and rehabilitation centres. Hospitals at Level 4 and above also offer many of these services, so check them too.
