Kisumu’s SHA Facilities in Numbers

Kisumu’s network is close to evenly split between public and private: 143 facilities are run by the county government and 126 are private, with 16 faith-based facilities and a handful of others. By level there are 148 Level 2 facilities, 99 Level 3 health centres and clinics, 41 Level 4 hospitals and specialist clinics, 3 Level 5 hospitals and 1 Level 6 hospital.

The Biggest Hospitals

  • Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu Central, a national government Level 6A hospital listed with 676 beds.
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital Nyabondo in Nyakach, a faith-based Level 5 hospital listed with 400 beds.
  • The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu in Kisumu Central, Level 5.
  • Max Cure Hospitals in Kisumu Central, Level 5.

SHA Facilities by Sub-County

Kisumu Central has the most with 73 facilities, then Nyando (43), Kisumu East (42), Kisumu West (39), Nyakach (37), Muhoroni (34) and Seme (24). Residents of the city should check both Kisumu Central and Kisumu East.

Specialist Services

Kisumu’s list includes 11 nursing homes and cottage hospitals, 4 dental clinics, 4 eye clinics, a specialist ophthalmic clinic, a maternity home and a specialist medical clinic. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital provides a wide range of specialist care on referral.

Public Hospitals by Sub-County

Five of Kisumu’s seven sub-counties have at least one county-run Level 4 hospital on SHA’s list:

  • Kisumu Central: Kisumu County Referral Hospital (195 beds), Lumumba, Migosi and Victoria Amenity hospitals.
  • Nyando: Ahero Sub-County Hospital (136 beds) and Rabuor Sub-County Hospital.
  • Muhoroni: Muhoroni (46 beds), Masogo and Nyang’oma sub-county hospitals.
  • Kisumu West: Chulaimbo, Nyahera and Ober Kamoth sub-county hospitals.
  • Nyakach: Katito Sub-County Hospital.

Kisumu East and Seme have none. Kisumu East does have private and mission Level 4 hospitals (listed below), and it borders the referral hospitals in Kisumu Central. Seme relies on Level 2 and 3 facilities locally, with the nearest Level 4 hospitals in Kisumu West, such as ACK Maseno Hospital and Masaba Hospital at Maseno.

Mission and Private Hospitals Outside the City

Many of Kisumu’s larger hospitals sit outside the city centre. St Jairus Hospital in Kisumu West is listed with 207 beds, St Lucia Medical Centre at Buoye in Kisumu East with 150, and Koru Holy Family Mission Hospital in Muhoroni with 100. St. Monica Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital Chiga in Kisumu East, and St. Vincent de Paul in Muhoroni, are faith-based Level 4 options.

Using SHA in Kisumu

Check your SHA status on *147# and carry your ID. Ask each facility which SHA services it offers. For specialist care at the referral hospital, you will usually need a referral from a lower-level facility unless it is an emergency.

County hospitals account for nearly half of the revenue Kisumu County raises itself. See the Kisumu County budget page for the figures.
