The IEBC register spells Ol Joro Orok constituency as “Ol Jorok”, and some county documents write Njabini/Kiburu as “Njabini/Kibiru” or Kanjuiri Range as “Kanjuiri Ridge”. They are the same wards. When you fill in a government form, use the spelling on the IEBC list, since that is what voter and candidate records use.

Largest and smallest wards by voters

On the 2022 register, the three biggest wards by registered voters were Weru in Ol Joro Orok (18,548), Gathara in Kinangop (18,144) and Central in Ndaragwa (18,113). The smallest were Geta in Kipipiri (11,098), North Kinangop (11,265) and Githabai (11,473), both in Kinangop. Kinangop alone holds about 32 percent of the county’s voters, which is why it has eight wards while the other constituencies have four or five.

What a county assembly ward does

A ward is the smallest electoral unit in Kenya’s devolved system. Voters in each ward elect one MCA every five years at the General Election. The MCA represents the ward in the County Assembly at Ol Kalou, where members pass county laws, approve the county budget and oversee the work of the Governor and county executive.

According to the Nyandarua County Assembly, the current (third) assembly has 25 elected MCAs, one for each ward, plus 16 nominated members who make up the gender and special interest seats. MCAs sit on select committees, such as those for agriculture, health and finance, which shape the business that comes before the House.

Wards also matter outside elections. Many county programmes are planned and shared out ward by ward, including ward development funds, bursaries for secondary and college students, and projects like feeder roads, water points and cattle dips. If you are applying for a county bursary, the form will usually ask for your ward, and the application may be vetted by a ward committee.

How to find which ward you are in

  1. Check your voter registration. If you are a registered voter, send your ID number by SMS to 70000 or use the voter verification service on the IEBC website. The reply shows your county, constituency, ward and polling centre.
  2. Ask your local chief or ward administrator. Every ward has a county ward administrator who can confirm boundaries, especially if you live near the line between two wards.
  3. Use the tables above. If you know the area you live in, such as Njabini, Engineer, Wanjohi or Ol Joro Orok town, match it to the ward and constituency listed.

Main towns and the wards around them

Ol Kalou town, the county headquarters, falls in Ol Kalou constituency, where Rurii and Kaimbaga wards sit close to the town. Engineer town, the main centre in the south, is in Engineer ward in Kinangop. Njabini, known for potato and dairy farming, is in Njabini/Kiburu ward. Ndaragwa constituency in the north borders Laikipia County, and Kipipiri lies along the slopes of the Kipipiri hill in the middle of the county.

Nyandarua is one of Kenya’s main potato, dairy and vegetable areas, so farming groups, cooperatives and SACCOs often organise by ward.
