Quick answer
KUCCPS ranks degree applicants by weighted cluster points out of 48. These combine your points in the four subjects a course requires with your overall KCSE aggregate. Grades convert to points from A (12) down to E (1).

KUCCPS ranks degree applicants by weighted cluster points, a single number out of 48 that blends how well you did in the four subjects a course cares about with how well you did overall. Once you understand the parts, you can estimate your own points in a few minutes, or let our KUCCPS cluster points calculator do it for every cluster at once.
Step 1: Convert Each Grade to Points
KCSE grades carry points from 12 down to 1:
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 12 | C | 6 |
| A- | 11 | C- | 5 |
| B+ | 10 | D+ | 4 |
| B | 9 | D | 3 |
| B- | 8 | D- | 2 |
| C+ | 7 | E | 1 |
Step 2: Find Your Aggregate Points (t)
Your aggregate is the total of seven subjects and is printed on your result slip, out of a maximum of 84. KNEC counts English, Kiswahili and Mathematics, your best two sciences, your best humanity, and your best remaining subject. An aggregate of 46 to 52 is a mean grade of C+, which is the usual minimum for a degree.
Step 3: Add Up Your Four Cluster Subjects (r)
Every degree programme names four cluster subjects. Some slots are fixed, such as Biology and Chemistry for nursing, and others let you use the best of several subjects. A subject can only be used once. The maximum is 48, which is four A grades.
Typical combinations from KUCCPS programme pages include:
- Cluster 1, Law: English or Kiswahili; Mathematics or a science; a humanity; and one more eligible subject.
- Cluster 10, Actuarial Science, Mathematics and Statistics: Mathematics A; a science; a humanity; and one more eligible subject.
- Cluster 13, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences: Biology; Chemistry; Mathematics A or Physics; and English, Kiswahili or another eligible subject.
- Cluster 5, Engineering: Mathematics A; Physics; Chemistry; and one more eligible subject.
Individual courses can differ, so always check the programme’s own page on the KUCCPS portal.
Step 4: Apply the Formula
The weighted cluster points formula that is widely published for KUCCPS placement is:
C = √( (r ÷ 48) × (t ÷ 84) ) × 48
In words: divide your cluster subject total by 48, divide your aggregate by 84, multiply the two results, take the square root, and multiply by 48. Because both parts are fractions of their maximum, a student with straight As in every subject scores exactly 48.

A Worked Example
Take a student with these grades: English B+, Kiswahili B, Mathematics A B-, Biology A-, Chemistry B+, Physics B, Geography B and CRE B+.
- Aggregate (t): English 10 + Kiswahili 9 + Mathematics 8 + Biology 11 + Chemistry 10 + CRE 10 + Physics 9 = 67 out of 84, a B+ mean grade.
- Cluster 13 subjects (r): Biology 11 + Chemistry 10 + Physics 9 (better than Mathematics) + English 10 = 40 out of 48.
- Formula: 40 ÷ 48 = 0.8333; 67 ÷ 84 = 0.7976; 0.8333 × 0.7976 = 0.6647; the square root is 0.8153; times 48 gives about 39.133.
For Cluster 10, the same student uses Mathematics 8, Biology 11, CRE 10 and Chemistry 10, a total of 39, which gives about 38.641. That is why one student can have very different points for medicine and for actuarial science.
What Pushes Your Points Up or Down
The square root means both halves matter. A strong cluster total cannot fully make up for a weak aggregate, and the reverse is also true. One grade higher in a cluster subject adds roughly half a point to a typical score, so a single subject can decide whether you clear a competitive cut-off such as medicine or pharmacy, which often sit above 40.
Why Your Official Points May Differ
KUCCPS does not publish an official calculator for applicants. It works out your weighted cluster points on the Students’ Portal from KNEC records, and it advises applicants to rely on the portal. Small differences can come from rounding, from which subjects KNEC counted in your aggregate, or from a programme that uses an unusual subject combination. Use your own estimate to plan, then confirm on the portal before you submit your choices.
