How to Buy KPLC Prepaid Tokens Using Equitel (2026): Everything You Need to Know

You can buy Kenya Power prepaid tokens with Equitel. Dial *247#, select Pay Bill, enter 888880, then your meter number, the amount, and your PIN. The money is deducted directly from your Equity Bank account. KPLC sends the token by SMS. Enter it into your meter and the units load.

Unlike mobile wallets, there is no separate float to top up. The payment comes straight from your bank account.

Step by Step

  1. Dial *247# on your Equitel line.
  2. Choose Pay Bill.
  3. Enter 888880 as the business number. This is KPLC’s paybill for prepaid tokens.
  4. Enter your prepaid meter number as the account number.
  5. Enter the amount in shillings.
  6. Enter your PIN and confirm.
  7. Wait for the confirmation SMS from Equity, then the token SMS from KPLC. Key the 20-digit token into your meter.

You can also make the same payment through the Equity mobile app, Equity Online, or Equity’s Eva chatbot. These are listed among Equity’s authorised channels for KPLC tokens.

Older Menu Paths

Some older guides mention going through Eazzy Pay, then selecting KPLC Tokens. Menus change over time. If your screen shows an Eazzy Pay option that leads to KPLC Tokens, it is the same transaction. The destination remains paybill 888880 and the account field is still your meter number.

How Equitel Differs from a Mobile Wallet

Equitel is Equity Bank’s mobile line. Payments are taken directly from your linked Equity account. There is no separate wallet balance to load. The amount you can spend depends on the available balance in your Equity account. You need an active Equity account to use Equitel.

What You Need

  • An Equitel line linked to an Equity Bank account
  • Your Equity PIN
  • Enough money in the account for the amount plus any fee
  • Your prepaid meter number (printed on the meter, usually 11 digits)

Read the meter number directly from the meter.

The Meter Number Matters

The account field must be your prepaid meter number. Do not enter your phone number, Equity account number, ID number, or a postpaid account number. A token bought against the wrong meter number loads onto that other meter. Recovering it requires applying to Kenya Power for reallocation.

Check the digits twice before you enter your PIN.

Prepaid and Postpaid Use Different Paybills

  • Prepaid tokens: paybill 888880, account number = your meter number
  • Postpaid bills: paybill 888888, account number = the number on your bill

Use 888880 for a token meter.

What It Costs

Equity’s fees for Equitel paybill payments can vary. There is no single widely published fixed fee for KPLC tokens. The fee that appears on your confirmation screen before you enter your PIN is the one that applies. Always check it, especially for larger amounts.

If the Token Does Not Arrive

Give it a few minutes first. Then:

  1. Dial *977# (KPLC’s USSD) and check your recent tokens, or open the myPower app.
  2. Note the transaction reference from your Equity confirmation SMS and contact Equity customer care.
  3. If Equity confirms the payment went through, contact Kenya Power with the same reference.

Keep the confirmation SMS until the units are loaded on your meter.

Buy Only from Official Channels

Kenya Power only authorises specific channels for prepaid tokens: paybill 888880, paybill 888888, the *977# code, the myPower app, and approved bank halls. Equity’s channels (including *247# and the Equity app) are recognised. Do not buy tokens from unofficial agents or third parties.

It is practical to keep a small reserve of units in case the vending system has a temporary outage.

Other Ways to Buy the Same Token

You can also buy KPLC prepaid tokens through M-Pesa (paybill 888880), Airtel Money (*334#), T-Kash (*160#), *977#, the myPower app, or other banks. The token itself is identical regardless of the payment method.

Common Questions

What code do I dial for Equitel?
*247#, then choose Pay Bill and enter 888880.

Do I need an Equity account?
Yes. Equitel is linked to an Equity Bank account. The money is deducted from that account.

Do I need M-Pesa?
No. The payment comes directly from your Equity account.

Which number do I enter as the account?
The meter number printed on your prepaid meter (usually 11 digits). Not your phone number.

That covers buying KPLC prepaid tokens with Equitel. Double-check the meter number, confirm the fee on the screen, and keep the confirmation SMS until the units appear on your meter.
