micro1 is a US company that hires people with real subject knowledge to train and test AI models. It’s one of the few big AI training platforms that doesn’t rule Kenya out on paper. “Not ruled out” isn’t the same as “easy to get into,” though. Here is exactly what micro1 publishes, and what we haven’t been able to confirm.
What the Work Is
micro1’s experts page says it connects domain experts with projects that build and improve AI systems. You either prove a specific skill on its platform or apply to an open opportunity on its job portal. Its contractor FAQ describes typical roles as part-time and flexible, at about 15 to 20 hours a week depending on the client. Detailed task instructions are shared only after onboarding because the projects are confidential.
This is expert work, not a beginner’s micro-task site. The open roles are mostly for people with a degree or professional background, such as coders, accountants, lawyers, doctors, teachers and writers.
Does micro1 Accept Kenyans?
Yes, on paper. Under “Do you hire globally?”, micro1 lists the countries and regions where it can’t hire residents for legal, regulatory and security reasons: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, DR Congo, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Yemen and Ethiopia. Kenya is not on that list.
Every application still has to be accepted for a specific opportunity. There’s no general “Kenya accounts” pool.

Sign-Up Requirements and the AI Interview
- Browse open opportunities on micro1’s experts page and apply to one that genuinely matches your field.
- Take micro1’s AI-led interview. It is run by its AI recruiter, so prepare as you would for a real technical interview in your subject.
- If accepted, you get a contract through Deel, micro1’s payroll platform.
- Complete KYC (identity verification) on Deel. The FAQ says this is mandatory, and payments can’t be processed until it’s done.
Practical points for Kenyan applicants: have your national ID or passport ready for Deel’s KYC, and make sure the country you select in Deel is Kenya. micro1’s Deel guide warns that a wrong country or missing documents delays payment.
How Pay Reaches You and M-Pesa
micro1 pays in USD twice a month. Pay periods run from the 1st to the 15th and the 16th to month-end. Payments are processed within five days after each period ends (micro1 Deel guide). Depending on the contract, you’re paid by approved hours tracked in Hubstaff, per approved task, or a flat fee per approved deliverable.
Money lands in your Deel balance first. Deel’s withdrawal FAQ lists bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer, Wise, Revolut, Coinbase and Deel Card as methods. It also says not every method works for every currency. The routes that would end in M-Pesa are:
- Deel → PayPal → M-Pesa through Safaricom’s M-Pesa PayPal service, which charges a conversion fee per Safaricom’s FAQ.
- Deel → Kenyan bank account → M-Pesa from your bank app.
Unverified: we haven’t tested a micro1 payout to a Kenyan account, and we haven’t confirmed which Deel withdrawal methods are offered to a Kenya-based contractor or what each costs. Until we, or a reader with proof, have done it, treat the routes above as possible, not proven.
Pay Figures
Rates are set per role and written into your contract. We didn’t find an official general pay range for Kenya-based contractors on micro1’s own pages, so pay is unverified. Ignore any “KSh X per day” claims in social media posts unless they come with a contract you can see.
Red Flags and Ban Risks
- Impersonation. Scammers use micro1’s name. micro1 says genuine emails come only from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co. A Gmail address or a WhatsApp “recruiter” isn’t micro1. Don’t pay anyone for an interview slot, and don’t send ID documents anywhere except micro1’s own flow and Deel.
- Interview help for hire. Paying someone else to sit the AI interview, or using a borrowed profile, breaks the terms and will likely surface as soon as you start real tasks.
- Quality removal. Contracts depend on approved work. Rejected tasks or flat-fee deliverables aren’t paid.
- No guaranteed hours. Work depends on client demand, so a project can end.
Verdict
We mark micro1 Verified for eligibility: it officially doesn’t exclude Kenya, and it uses a recognised payroll platform with KYC. Payout to M-Pesa is still unverified. We’ll move it to fully proven once we have real payout evidence, or downgrade it the same day if Kenya is added to the excluded list. Compare it with other options on the Kenya eligibility tracker.
