OpenTrain AI does two things, and mixing them up is the most common mistake people make with it. It’s a marketplace where companies hire AI trainers directly and pay through OpenTrain. It also shows a feed of jobs from more than 20 other platforms, such as Outlier, DataAnnotation and micro1, that it simply links out to. Whether you, in Kenya, can do a job depends on which of the two it is.
What the Work Is
OpenTrain’s freelancer page describes AI-trainer and data-labelling work such as response evaluation, red-teaming, transcription QA, image labelling and code review. Some jobs let you apply on OpenTrain directly. Others send you to the hiring platform. OpenTrain says it’s free for freelancers, with no fees and no card required.
That second category matters for Kenyans. A job in OpenTrain’s feed that links to Outlier or DataAnnotation still follows those platforms’ country rules, and both currently exclude Kenya. Check the destination platform’s own eligibility before you apply. Our tracker lists most of them.
Does OpenTrain Accept Kenyans?
For jobs paid through OpenTrain itself, yes. OpenTrain’s payout country availability page (last updated 1 May 2026) lists Kenya among the countries where you can set up payouts and get paid to a local bank account. Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia and South Africa are also listed. OpenTrain says that if a country isn’t on the list, it can’t pay out there.

Sign-Up Requirements
- A free profile with your skills, subject areas, languages and hourly rate.
- Payout setup from Settings → Payouts → Add Payout Method. Stripe hosts the form and asks for your country, identity details, bank account and any tax details.
- You don’t need your own Stripe.com account. OpenTrain’s non-US payout guide says this directly, because many Kenyans assume Stripe isn’t available here.
- The payout country is locked once you confirm it, so choose Kenya carefully and use a bank account in your own name.
Tests vary by employer. OpenTrain doesn’t run a single entry exam. Each hiring company sets its own screening.
How Pay Reaches You and M-Pesa
OpenTrain works on milestones (payments & payouts):
- The employer funds a milestone. You see it as “Active & Funded” before you start.
- You finish the work and click “Complete & Request Payout.”
- The employer approves it, and the milestone shows “Paid.”
- Stripe sends the money to your connected bank account on a daily payout schedule. Timing varies by country and bank.
So the official route is OpenTrain → Kenyan bank account. From there you can move money to M-Pesa through your bank’s app or USSD. There’s no direct OpenTrain-to-M-Pesa option. Unverified: we haven’t yet received a payout to a Kenyan bank through OpenTrain, and we haven’t confirmed which currency it arrives in or what conversion your bank applies.
Pay Figures
Pay is set per job by the employer. OpenTrain’s marketing page shows sample job cards between $16 and $75 an hour. Those are adverts, not verified earnings, and they aren’t specific to Kenya. Real pay for Kenya-based trainers is unverified. Only funded milestones count. A rate on a card isn’t money until the milestone is funded.
Red Flags and Ban Risks
- Unfunded work. Don’t start work on a milestone that isn’t “Active & Funded.” That’s the protection OpenTrain’s system gives you.
- Off-platform payment requests. An “employer” who asks you to move to WhatsApp, or to be paid outside OpenTrain, removes that protection. Treat it as a warning sign.
- Linked-out jobs. Applying to an external platform from Kenya when that platform excludes Kenya wastes your time and may get your profile flagged there.
- No referral programme. OpenTrain shows no freelancer referral scheme, so anyone selling an “OpenTrain referral code” is selling nothing.
Verdict
Verified for eligibility: Kenya is on the official payout-country list, money is held in funded milestones, and payouts go to a local bank account. We’ll upgrade the payout section once we have real payout evidence. Compare it with the alternatives on the Kenya eligibility tracker.
