Prolific is a UK-based research platform where universities and AI companies pay people to take part in studies. It has a good reputation among participants in Europe and North America. For Kenya the honest answer is “mostly no, with an exception,” and the exception is the reason this page has a blue “Unclear” badge rather than a grey one.
What the Work Is
Researchers post studies, which can be surveys, behavioural experiments or tasks evaluating AI outputs. Researchers choose who can see each study using filters. Prolific’s researcher help page on filters says age and current country of residence are verified by Prolific itself, so participants can’t simply pick a country.
Does Prolific Accept Kenyans?
Not as a supported country. Prolific’s participant help article “Who can participate in studies on Prolific?” (updated 2 September 2026) says the platform is open to participants in most OECD countries and gives a full list. The only African countries on it are South Africa and Egypt. Kenya is not listed. Eligibility depends on where you live, not your nationality.
The same article says that people in unsupported countries can join a waitlist. It adds that Prolific “in some cases” invites participants from outside the list, and those people must verify with a valid photo ID, ideally a passport. Prolific’s researcher page “Who are the participants on Prolific?” (June 2026) also lists Kenya among countries where it has “small participant populations.”
So a few people in Kenya are on Prolific by invitation. You can’t sign up from Kenya and expect to be let in, and nobody can sell you an invitation.

Sign-Up Requirements and Checks
- Over 18 years old.
- A verified account. Prolific’s identity FAQ requires a valid ID issued by your current country of residence. Invited participants from unsupported countries are asked for a passport, verified through Onfido.
- For people outside the supported list, waitlist only, until Prolific contacts you.
How Pay Would Reach M-Pesa
Unverified. We didn’t confirm which payout methods Prolific offers to invited participants based in Kenya, so we won’t describe an M-Pesa route. If you’ve been invited and paid, a report from you (below) is the fastest way we can fill this gap with evidence.
Pay Figures
Each study shows its reward and estimated time before you start. We didn’t verify Prolific’s current minimum hourly reward on its own pages during this check, so we’re not quoting one here. Pay is unverified.
Red Flags and Ban Risks
- Location is verified. Because Prolific checks country of residence itself, using a VPN or a foreign address to appear to live in a supported country is the fastest route to a closed account.
- Borrowed or bought accounts. Accounts verified with someone else’s passport or residence permit break the rules and risk your money. Prolific bans participants whose identity doesn’t match.
- Fake “Prolific jobs” adverts. Prolific doesn’t hire participants as employees and doesn’t charge to join. Posts promising a “Prolific job” for an activation fee are scams.
Verdict
Unclear. Kenya isn’t a supported country, but Prolific does admit a small number of invited participants here. Joining the waitlist is free and harmless. Just don’t plan around it. For platforms that openly list Kenya, see the Kenya eligibility tracker.
