Source: Ministry of Education school list for Kiambu Sub-County, as republished in the public school directory at studyinkenya.co.ke, checked October 25, 2026. The Ministry’s own NEMIS institution search was offline when we checked.

What “Primary” means under CBC

Under the Competency-Based Curriculum, primary school runs from Grade 1 to Grade 6, after two years of pre-primary (PP1 and PP2). Junior school covers Grades 7 to 9. Many private schools in the list also run a kindergarten and some run a junior school, but the register entry above shows only the primary level. If you need a junior school place, ask the school whether its junior school is registered separately, because the Ministry assesses each level on its own.

How to check that a private school is registered

Registration matters. A school that is not registered cannot present candidates for national assessments in its own name, and learners may have trouble moving to another school or getting their records into the national system. Follow these steps before you pay a deposit.

  1. Ask for the registration certificate. A registered private school holds a certificate of registration issued by the Ministry of Education. Ask to see the original and note the registration number and the levels it covers.
  2. Search the Ministry’s institution list. The NEMIS institutions list at nemis.education.go.ke lets you filter by level and by private or public, then search the school’s name. The Ministry is moving schools to its newer KEMIS system, so if a name is missing, ask the school for its KEMIS or NEMIS code.
  3. Ask for the KNEC centre code. Schools that present learners for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) at the end of Grade 6 need a KNEC examination centre code. Some small schools register their learners through a nearby centre instead, so ask which centre the Grade 6 learners sit at.
  4. Visit the Sub-County Director of Education. The Kiambu Sub-County education office keeps records of registered schools in the sub-county. Ask whether the school is registered and whether any inspection issues are outstanding.
  5. Check the premises. Public health and fire safety approvals from Kiambu County are part of the registration process. A school should be able to show them.
  6. Pay only into the school’s account. Pay fees into a bank account or paybill in the school’s registered name, never into a personal M-Pesa number, and keep every receipt.

Fees and admissions

Private schools set their own fees, and the Ministry’s fee caps apply only to public schools. Ask for the 2026 fee structure in writing on the school’s letterhead, including lunch, transport, uniform, activity and exam charges. Compare at least three schools in the same area, and ask whether fees are paid termly or annually and what the refund policy is if a child leaves mid-term.

For national and county secondary schools in the county, the gazetted fee caps and the best-performing schools are covered in our best schools in Kiambu County guide.
