T-Kash is Telkom Kenya’s mobile money service. If you have a Telkom line, T-Kash lets you send money to any network, pay bills, buy airtime and move money to and from banks. Registration is free, and once you are set up, activation takes a few minutes. This guide explains what you need, how registration works at an agent, how to activate your account and set a PIN, and what to do next.

Why Use T-Kash

Many Kenyans carry two SIM cards. If your second line is Telkom, T-Kash gives you a backup wallet when another network is down, a way to receive money from people on any network, and free airtime purchases. It also works well for people who use Telkom for data and want everything on one line.

What You Need

  • An active Telkom line registered in your name.
  • Your original National ID card or passport. Telkom asks for the original, not a photocopy, when registering and when transacting at agents.
  • A phone that can access the Telkom SIM menu, or a smartphone for the T-Kash app.

Step 1: Register at an Agent or Telkom Shop

  1. Visit a T-Kash agent or a Telkom shop with your original ID or passport.
  2. Tell the agent you want to register for T-Kash.
  3. The agent captures your details and links T-Kash to your line.
  4. Wait for an SMS confirming that your line has been registered.

If your Telkom line is not yet registered in your name, the agent will register the SIM first as required by law.

Step 2: Activate Your Account

  1. Open the T-Kash menu on your phone.
  2. Select Activate.
  3. Enter the ID number you used to register.
  4. Enter your date of birth in the format DDMMYYYY, for example 05031990.
  5. Choose a new four digit PIN and enter it again to confirm.
  6. You receive a confirmation SMS from T-Kash.

Choosing Your PIN

Pick a PIN that is hard to guess. Avoid 0000, 1234, your year of birth and digits from your ID or phone number. Do not reuse your M-Pesa or bank card PIN, so that if one is exposed the others stay safe. Never share it with anyone, including people who call claiming to work for Telkom.

Using T-Kash Alongside M-Pesa

Most T-Kash users also have M-Pesa on a Safaricom line. The two wallets can send money to each other, so you do not need to choose one. A practical approach is to keep a small balance on T-Kash for airtime, which is free to buy, and for emergencies when another network is having problems. When a relative or client can only pay you on one network, you can still receive it and move it across later. Keep in mind that each cross network transfer has a fee, so plan transfers instead of moving small amounts back and forth. Also remember that your T-Kash PIN and M-Pesa PIN should be different.

Common Registration Problems

Activation says details do not match. Make sure you entered the same ID number used at registration and your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.

No activation SMS. Wait a few minutes and try again. If it still fails, return to the agent or call Telkom customer care.

The agent will not accept a copy of my ID. Telkom requires the original document.
