DataAnnotation advertises some of the highest published rates in AI training, so it’s no surprise Kenyans keep asking about it. The company itself is legitimate. The short answer for anyone living in Kenya, though, is that the sign-up page will let you create an account, and that is as far as it goes.

What DataAnnotation Does

According to its FAQ, workers evaluate chatbot responses, compare AI outputs, flag factual errors, test AI-generated images, write difficult prompts and review code. It runs separate tracks: General, Multilingual, Coding, STEM and Professional (law, finance, medicine). Each track has its own Starter Assessment. The FAQ says you can take the Starter Assessment only once, with no retakes.

Does DataAnnotation Accept Kenyans?

No, not at present. Step one on DataAnnotation’s home page says: “We’re currently accepting folks from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia. If you are outside these countries, you are still welcome to make an account (we’ll email you when we’re ready for you).”

That’s why so many Kenyans say “I signed up and never heard back.” Creating an account isn’t the same as being accepted. Some Kenyan blogs point to other DataAnnotation marketing that talks about global reach. We go by the specific acceptance statement on the sign-up flow, which doesn’t include Kenya. The FAQ also tells you to turn off VPNs during identity checks, which shows location is actively verified.

Sign-Up Requirements and Tests (for Eligible Countries)

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent real-world experience for general work. Higher tiers need advanced degrees or professional credentials.
  • Fluent English and reliable internet.
  • One Starter Assessment of about an hour. Specialist assessments take one to two hours.
  • Identity verification through Persona, using a physical government ID and a selfie video.

How Pay Would Reach M-Pesa

DataAnnotation pays only through PayPal, and deposits arrive “within a few days” of requesting them (FAQ). PayPal balances can move to M-Pesa through Safaricom’s M-Pesa PayPal service. For a Kenyan resident, though, there’s no legitimate account to be paid from, so this route doesn’t apply today.

Pay Figures (Official, for Eligible Countries)

The FAQ publishes starting rates: General $25–$50 an hour, Multilingual $25–$40, Coding $40–$150+, and STEM and Professional $40–$125+. These are DataAnnotation’s own figures for workers in its accepted countries. They tell you nothing about what a Kenyan would earn, and nobody in Kenya can currently earn them legitimately.

Red Flags and Ban Risks

  • Accounts “for sale.” High published rates make DataAnnotation a favourite for account sellers in Kenyan groups. A bought or rented account is tied to someone else’s identity, PayPal and country. You can lose the earnings, the account, or both, and you depend entirely on a stranger’s honesty. We won’t explain or link to any of it.
  • VPN detection. The FAQ asks users to switch VPNs off for identity verification. A location that doesn’t match your ID is an easy way to get flagged.
  • “Pay to get in” offers. DataAnnotation says it never asks for money. Anyone charging you for a DataAnnotation “slot” or test answers is running a scam on you, not a shortcut.

Verdict

Dead (for Kenya). DataAnnotation is a real company that pays real workers, just not in Kenya. Making a free account does no harm, and it’s how you’d hear if they expand. Don’t spend your one Starter Assessment hoping it will unlock anything. We re-check the acceptance list monthly. For platforms that do list Kenya, see the Kenya eligibility tracker.
