Parklands Sports Club is one of the oldest members’ clubs in East and Central Africa. It was founded in 1906, sits on about 22 acres on Ojijo Road off Museum Hill, roughly two kilometres from the Nairobi CBD, and has about 4,000 main members, not counting dependants. Getting in is not a matter of simply paying a fee. You need to be proposed by existing members, vetted by a committee and admitted when a vacancy opens.

This guide sets out the membership requirements, the categories and the entrance fees exactly as the club publishes them on its Membership and Membership Categories pages. Quarterly subscriptions are fixed by the club’s Annual or Special General Meeting and are not published online, so confirm the current subscription with the membership office before you apply.

Parklands Sports Club membership requirements

According to the club, the joining process works like this:

  1. Find two full members to propose and second you. They fill in the club’s prescribed application form with you. The proposer must have been a member for more than three years, and a member can propose at most 10 people a year.
  2. Attach your documents. The form must come with a detailed CV, a copy of your passport or national ID card, and copies of your professional and academic certificates.
  3. Wait for the Balloting Committee. The committee evaluates every application and admits only applicants who meet the club’s entry requirements.
  4. Admission depends on vacancies. The number of new members taken in depends on the vacancies available, and admission is on a first come, first admitted basis.

Full membership is for people aged 25 and above who have been balloted and elected by the Main Committee. If you are younger and the child of a full member, see the junior category below.

Parklands Sports Club membership fees

These are the entrance fees listed on the club’s Membership page:

Fee Amount
Full member entrance fee KSh 775,000
Junior member entrance fee KSh 13,650
Conversion from junior to full member KSh 120,750

The entrance fee is a one-off payment on admission. On top of it, members pay quarterly subscriptions, plus any levies the club approves. Members can pay subscriptions and top up their member cards online through the club’s Pesapal payment page, which is linked from the Online Payment page of its website.

What members get

The club describes itself as a home of more than 12 sports. Its facilities page lists a rubber walking and jogging track, a football pitch, cricket, eight squash courts, eight tennis courts, a clay hockey pitch, volleyball and basketball courts, four snooker tables, pool tables and table tennis. There is a large gym with an aerobics studio, a spin bike studio and a paraplegic gym, a heated quarter Olympic size swimming pool with a baby pool, and a children’s play area for under 12s.

Beyond sport, the club has restaurants and bars, the Twiga Bandas for self-assisted koroga cooking, a library, conference and meeting rooms, and 18 bed and breakfast rooms facing the pool for reciprocating members, upcountry members and members’ guests. Other services on site include a car wash, a salon and barber shop, laundry, physiotherapy, a pharmacy and M-Pesa.

Is it worth it?

At KSh 775,000 the entrance fee is a serious commitment, so work out how often you will actually use the club before you apply. A family that swims, uses the gym and eats there every week gets far more value than someone who visits once a month. Remember that the quarterly subscription is a recurring cost on top of the entrance fee, and ask the membership office whether the entrance fee can be paid in instalments.
