Most Lipa Mdogo Mdogo scams follow one pattern: someone who is not the provider asks you to pay money to a number, till or person that is not the provider’s official channel. M-KOPA’s Kenyan terms say it accepts payments only through M-Pesa Paybill 333222 or its app and “no alternative forms of payment including cash”, and Watu says no cash payments are accepted for its loans. If anyone asks for cash, a “processing fee” to a personal number or a deposit before you have seen the phone, treat it as a scam. This guide lists seven common Lipa Mdogo Mdogo scams and how to check each one.

7 Lipa Mdogo Mdogo scams to watch for
1. The “agent” who collects cash
A person in a branded T-shirt offers to “pay for you” or take your daily instalments in cash. M-KOPA’s terms say cash payments are not valid and ask customers to report anyone who requests one to customerprotection@m-kopa.com. Money paid this way never reaches your account, so your phone still gets locked.
2. “Deposit first” phone sellers on Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp
Pages using provider logos promise a phone “on Lipa Mdogo Mdogo with no ID” if you send a deposit to a personal number or an unknown till. Genuine plans require you to register with your own ID and pay through the provider’s own channel. Use the checks in our online shopping scams guide.
3. Fake apps and links
Look-alike apps or links ask for your M-Pesa PIN or ID photos. Download apps only from the official store listing linked from the provider’s website, and never share your PIN.
4. “We can unlock your phone” services
Fixers offer to remove the lock on a financed phone for a fee. M-KOPA’s terms treat tampering as a fundamental breach that voids the warranty and allows it to cancel the agreement and keep the phone, and warn that it may lead to criminal charges. You still owe the balance. Read how CRB listing works before you ignore arrears.
5. Buying a “cheap” phone that is still on instalments
A seller offers a nearly new phone at a low price. If it is still financed, it can be locked when the original account falls behind, and you have no rights against the provider. M-KOPA accounts cannot be transferred, and Watu says a financed motorbike cannot be sold without its written consent.
6. Fake loan “top-ups” and limit increases
Callers claim you qualify for a bigger limit or a cash loan if you pay a “clearance” or “insurance” fee first. Licensed lenders deduct fees from the loan itself and disclose them; they do not ask you to send money first. Compare with M-KOPA’s real loan terms.
7. Fake debt collectors
Someone threatens you over arrears and gives a personal number to pay. Check your real balance in the provider’s app or USSD (*876# for Watu) and pay only to the official channel. Harassment can be reported: see how to report loan harassment to ODPC and CBK.
A 60-second check before you pay
- Is the Paybill or till the provider’s official one (333222 for M-KOPA)?
- Does the M-Pesa confirmation name the provider, not a person?
- Are you registering with your own ID, in a shop or app you found on the provider’s own website?
- Is the lender on CBK’s licensed directory?
- Have you seen the full instalment total, not just the daily amount? Our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo true cost guide shows how to work it out.
If you have already paid a scammer, report to the provider’s fraud desk, your nearest police station or the DCI, and ask Safaricom to reverse the M-Pesa transaction as soon as possible.
Frequently asked questions
Does M-KOPA accept cash payments?
No. M-KOPA’s terms say only Paybill 333222 and the M-KOPA app are valid; cash or other channels are not accepted.
How do I report a fake M-KOPA agent?
Email customerprotection@m-kopa.com, the address M-KOPA gives in its terms for reports of fraud or requests for cash payments.
Can I pay my Watu loan from another number?
Yes. Watu’s app lets you choose “Pay with another number”, but the payment must still go through Watu’s official M-Pesa route.
Is it safe to buy a second-hand phone that is on Lipa Mdogo Mdogo?
No. The phone can be locked if the original account falls behind, and the buyer has no rights against the provider.
