Lipa Mdogo Mdogo CRB Listing: Rules, M-KOPA and Clearing It

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo CRB Listing: Rules, M-KOPA and Clearing It

Updated 28 October 2026

Yes, a Lipa Mdogo Mdogo CRB listing can happen. If you buy a phone, solar kit or other item on instalments from a CBK-regulated credit provider and fall behind, the lender can report the arrears to a credit reference bureau (CRB), which can block you from loans elsewhere. M-KOPA’s own terms say it reports your payment history, good and bad, to credit bureaus. But the law sets limits: no negative listing for KSh 1,000 or less, at least 30 days’ notice before a negative listing (unless your contract says otherwise), and a free credit report at least once a year.

Updated October 2026. Sources: The Banking (Credit Reference Bureau) Regulations, 2020 (Legal Notice 55 of 2020, CBK copy); CBK press release of 14 April 2020; M-KOPA Kenya terms of service (read 28 Oct 2026).

Does Lipa Mdogo Mdogo affect your CRB status?

It depends on who financed the item. CRB reporting in Kenya is open to banks, microfinance banks, SASRA-regulated Saccos and other credit information providers approved by CBK. In April 2020 CBK withdrew the approvals of unregulated digital and credit-only lenders to submit data to CRBs, after complaints about misuse. So:

  • Regulated credit providers (for example CBK-licensed digital credit providers) can report you, both when you pay well and when you default.
  • An unlicensed seller or lender has no business listing you. If one threatens to, check its licence first: see your BNPL rights under the 2024 law.

Since the Business Laws (Amendment) Act, 2024, buy now pay later and pay-as-you-go arrangements can fall under CBK’s non-deposit-taking credit regime, which brings more instalment providers inside the licensed system that reports to CRBs.

What M-KOPA says about CRB reporting

M-KOPA’s Kenyan terms of service state that the credit provider is M-KOPA Kenya Loans Limited, licensed and regulated by CBK, and that:

  • it reports your payment history to credit bureaus, so paying on time builds your credit score;
  • if you fall behind, it will notify you before reporting negatively;
  • it keeps reporting negative history until you are current again;
  • if you have more than one product (for example a phone loan and a cash loan), each is reported separately.

Other providers set their own terms. Read the “credit reporting” or “credit bureau” clause in your agreement before you sign. For M-KOPA payments, see our M-KOPA paybill guide.

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo CRB rules that protect instalment buyers

Rule What the 2020 Regulations say

Notice after listing Within 30 days of sending information to a bureau, the lender must tell you it has done so.
Wrong information A bureau told of inaccurate data must update its database within two working days; lenders who keep sending inaccurate data can be barred.
How long a default stays Up to five years from the date you finally settle the arrears (seven years after a bankruptcy discharge).
Free credit report At least once a year from each bureau, within 30 days of an adverse action notice, and every six months after asking for a correction.

Missed a payment? Avoiding a Lipa Mdogo Mdogo CRB listing

  1. Act on the first reminder. The notice period is your window. Pay the arrears or call the provider to agree a plan before the 30 days run out.
  2. Get everything in writing. Save M-Pesa messages and any agreement to restructure.
  3. Check the amount. If what you owe is KSh 1,000 or less, it should not be listed.
  4. Know the device rules. M-KOPA’s terms allow it to lock the financed product until you are current. Locking and CRB reporting are separate consequences.

Already listed? How to check and clear it

  1. Get your free report from a CRB: see how to check your CRB status.
  2. If the listing is wrong (wrong amount, already paid, not your account), file a dispute with the bureau and the lender.
  3. If it is correct, settle or agree a plan. The listing then shows as settled, and the record is kept for up to five years from settlement.
  4. Ask for a clearance certificate if a lender or employer needs one: see TransUnion CRB clearance.
  5. Rebuild with on-time payments; our guide on improving your credit score explains how.

If a collector harasses you or your contacts, report it: see how to report loan harassment to ODPC and CBK. Before signing any plan, work out the real price with our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo true cost guide.
