Updated 2 November 2026
KMTC vs university vs TVET in short: TVET is the cheapest and easiest to enter (KSh 67,189 a year standard fee, diplomas from a C- minus), KMTC is the focused route into health jobs (about KSh 238,200 for a three-year diploma, most diplomas need a C plain), and university takes longest and costs most but is the only route to a degree (minimum C+ plus, usually four years). All three place students through KUCCPS and all three qualify for HELB support. Use the table below to compare them on cost, grades, time and jobs.
Updated November 2026. Fees and entry grades from KMTC’s September 2026 intake documents, the public TVET standard fee and KUCCPS requirements. Your admission letter shows the fee you will actually pay.

Cost compared over the whole course
- TVET diploma (3 years): 3 Ă— KSh 67,189 = about KSh 201,567 in standard fees, most of it covered by capitation and HELB for KUCCPS-placed trainees. Boarding, tools and materials are extra. See TVET fees 2026.
- KMTC diploma (3 years): about KSh 238,200 for government-sponsored students, before accommodation, meals, uniforms and books. Self-sponsored students pay more. See the KMTC intake guide.
- University degree (4 years): varies most. Self-sponsored nursing degrees, for example, run from KSh 275,400 to KSh 320,061 a year at the public universities we track; government-sponsored students pay much less. See university fees in Kenya.
Living costs often outweigh tuition, so a college close to home can save more than a cheaper fee elsewhere.
Which route fits your grade?
| KCSE mean grade | Realistic options |
|---|---|
| C+ and above | University degree; or KMTC/TVET diploma if you prefer a faster, cheaper route |
| C (plain) | KMTC diplomas (clinical medicine, nursing, pharmacy, lab sciences); TVET diplomas |
| C- (minus) | TVET diplomas; some KMTC certificates (e.g. enrolled nursing) |
| D+ / D (plain) | TVET certificates; some KMTC certificates |
| Below D | TVET artisan courses and vocational centres |
Meeting the minimum makes you eligible but popular courses fill with higher grades first. Work out your points with our KUCCPS cluster points calculator.
Jobs and pay
Health diplomas from KMTC lead straight to regulated county jobs: a diploma clinical officer starts at Job Group J and a diploma nurse at Job Group H on county scales. TVET graduates often find work faster in trades and can start their own business with tools and a licence. Degrees open graduate trainee schemes and professional posts that ask for a bachelor’s. Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, KMTC or TVET?
TVET. The standard public TVET fee is KSh 67,189 a year, about KSh 201,567 over three years, against about KSh 238,200 for a three-year KMTC diploma for government-sponsored students.
Is KMTC better than university?
It depends on your goal. KMTC is faster and cheaper and leads directly to health jobs; university takes longer and costs more but gives a degree, which some posts and promotions require. KMTC diploma holders can upgrade to a degree later.
What grade do I need for TVET?
Typically C- (minus) for a diploma and D (plain) for a certificate, with artisan courses open to lower grades. Some courses set higher subject requirements.
Can I get HELB for KMTC and TVET?
Yes. Students placed through KUCCPS at KMTC and public TVET colleges can apply for HELB support.
