Hustler Fund vs M-Shwari 2026: Which Loan Costs Less?

Hustler Fund vs M-Shwari 2026: 8% a year vs a 7.5% fee per 30-day loan, real costs on KSh 1,000 to 10,000, savings deductions, late penalties and which to use.

Hustler Fund vs M-Shwari 2026: Which Loan Costs Less?

Updated 2 November 2026

Hustler Fund vs M-Shwari: the Hustler Fund is far cheaper. It charges 8% a year, worked out daily, so a KSh 5,000 loan repaid in 14 days costs about KSh 15. The same KSh 5,000 on M-Shwari costs KSh 450 (a 7.5% facilitation fee plus 20% excise on the fee). The catch is that the Hustler Fund keeps 5% of every loan as savings, its limits start small, and the rate rises to 9.5% after day 14. M-Shwari gives a full 30 days and usually larger limits for regular M-Pesa users.

Updated November 2026 from the Financial Inclusion Fund (Hustler Fund) product terms and NCBA’s M-Shwari loan terms, as published on our Hustler Fund guide and M-Shwari charges guide. This is information, not financial advice.

What each loan really costs

Loan Hustler Fund, repaid in 14 days Hustler Fund, repaid in 30 days M-Shwari, repaid in 30 days
KSh 1,000 about KSh 3 about KSh 7 KSh 90
KSh 2,000 about KSh 6 about KSh 14 KSh 180
KSh 5,000 about KSh 15 about KSh 36 KSh 450
KSh 10,000 about KSh 31 about KSh 72 KSh 900

Hustler Fund figures use 8% a year for the first 14 days and 9.5% a year for days 15 to 30, on the full amount borrowed. M-Shwari figures are the 7.5% fee plus the 1.5% excise deducted at payout. Even repaid late, the Hustler Fund costs a fraction of M-Shwari. Test other amounts with the Hustler Fund loan calculator and the loan app cost checker.

The Hustler Fund savings deduction

When you borrow from the Hustler Fund, 95% goes to your mobile money wallet and 5% is saved for you: 70% of that into a long-term pension account and 30% into short-term savings. So a KSh 5,000 loan puts KSh 4,750 in your wallet, but you repay the full KSh 5,000 plus interest. The savings are yours, but if you need the full amount today, borrow a little more or plan for the shortfall.

M-Shwari: what you get for the higher price

  • A full 30 days to repay before any penalty.
  • Limits that grow with how much you use M-Pesa and save in M-Shwari.
  • Savings and Lock Savings accounts on the same menu.

M-Shwari’s cost is a flat fee per loan, so repaying early does not reduce it. On a KSh 5,000 loan taken every month, the fee comes to KSh 5,400 a year. See how to apply for M-Shwari.

Hustler Fund vs M-Shwari: which should you use?

  1. Short need you can repay within two weeks: Hustler Fund, by a wide margin.
  2. You need more than your Hustler Fund limit: M-Shwari, or a Sacco or bank loan for larger amounts.
  3. You are on Airtel or Telkom: Hustler Fund works on all three networks; M-Shwari needs Safaricom.
  4. You need the full amount in hand: remember the Hustler Fund keeps 5% as savings.
  5. You borrow every month: neither is ideal. A Sacco loan on a reducing balance is usually cheaper over a year.

Frequently asked questions

Hustler Fund vs M-Shwari: which is cheaper?

Yes. A KSh 5,000 Hustler Fund loan repaid in 14 days costs about KSh 15 in interest, while the same amount on M-Shwari costs KSh 450 in fees and excise.

Why do I receive less than I borrowed from the Hustler Fund?

5% of each loan goes to savings: 70% to a long-term pension account and 30% to short-term savings. You still repay the full loan.

What happens if I repay the Hustler Fund late?

The rate rises from 8% to 9.5% a year after day 14, and late repayment can reduce your limit or stop you borrowing.

Can I use both the Hustler Fund and M-Shwari?

Yes. They are separate products, but both report repayment behaviour, so default on either can hurt your credit record.
