How the Kenya Open grew

The Kenya Open was an associate event on the Far East Circuit in 1967 and 1968, then became a cornerstone of the Safari Circuit of tournaments in Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe. The European Tour took over the Safari events and folded them into its second-tier Challenge Tour in 1991. Apart from 1994, the Kenya Open stayed on the Challenge Tour until 2019, when it was promoted to the main European Tour, now the DP World Tour. It is played as the Magical Kenya Open, and the 2026 edition carried a US$2.7 million prize fund.

The step up has made the week one of Nairobi’s biggest corporate hospitality events, with banks, insurers and hotels using the pro-am and spectator village to host clients. If you want to play the host courses yourself, see golf green fees in Nairobi, Muthaiga Golf Club membership fees and our list of golf clubs in Kenya.
