Updated 2 November 2026
The import duty on Toyota Premio cars brought into Kenya in 2026 ranges from about KSh 563,499 to KSh 1,785,492 in total KRA taxes, depending on the variant and year of manufacture. These figures use KRA’s Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) list of July 2025, which has 4 Premio variants priced from KSh 3,580,552 to KSh 4,357,981, and KRA’s own worksheet: 35% import duty, 20% excise for engines up to 1,500cc (25% or 35% for bigger engines), 16% VAT, 2.5% Import Declaration Fee and 2% Railway Development Levy. Because of KEBS’s eight-year rule, only Premios made in 2019 or later can be imported in 2026.

Toyota Premio variants on the KRA CRSP list
| Variant (KRA name) | Model code | Engine | Fuel | CRSP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PREMIO 1.5F EX | 3BA-NZT260-AEXEK(X) | 1,496cc | Gasoline | KSh 3,580,552 |
| PREMIO 2.0G | DBA-ZRT261-AEXGP | 1,986cc | Gasoline | KSh 4,344,220 |
| PREMIO 2.0G EEX | DBA-ZRT261-AEXGP(X) | 1,986cc | Gasoline | KSh 4,344,220 |
| PREMIO 2.0G EX PACKAGE” | DBA-ZRT261-AEXGP(X) | 1,986cc | Gasoline | KSh 4,357,981 |
KRA lists hybrids under gasoline. Match your car’s model code (on the export certificate or auction sheet) to the right row, because two Premios that look alike can carry different CRSP values.

KRA depreciation for direct imports in 2026: 2025 model 0%, 2024 20%, 2023 30%, 2022 40%, 2021 50%, 2020 55%, 2019 60%. Age is counted as the assessment year minus the year of manufacture.
Worked example: PREMIO 1.5F EX (1,496cc), 2020
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| CRSP | KSh 3,580,552 |
| Depreciation (6 years) | 55% |
| Customs value = CRSP ÷ 1.25 × (1 − 0.55) ÷ 1.35 ÷ 1.20 ÷ 1.16 | KSh 685,930 |
| Import duty 35% | KSh 240,075 |
| Excise duty 20% | KSh 185,201 |
| VAT 16% | KSh 177,793 |
| IDF 2.5% | KSh 17,148 |
| RDL 2% | KSh 13,719 |
| Total KRA taxes | KSh 633,936 |
The customs value works backwards from the CRSP, which already includes duty, excise and VAT, so the 1.25, 1.35, excise and 1.16 divisors strip those out before the taxes are charged again on the declared value. Our CRSP explainer walks through why.
How to work out the import duty on Toyota Premio yourself
- Get the exact model code and year of manufacture from the seller’s export certificate or auction sheet.
- Find the matching row and CRSP in KRA’s July 2025 list.
- Apply the depreciation for the car’s age.
- Pick the excise band: 20% up to 1,500cc; 25% for petrol 1,501-3,000cc or diesel 1,501-2,500cc; 35% above that.
- Compute customs value, then duty, excise, VAT, IDF and RDL as in the example.
For the full rules see car import duty rates in Kenya.
The eight-year rule and the Premio
KEBS standard KS 1515 bars used cars more than eight years from the year of first registration. In 2026 that means a Premio first registered in 2019 or later. An older car is turned away at Mombasa whatever the tax. Details: KEBS eight-year rule.
Costs that are not KRA taxes
Freight from Japan or the UK, marine insurance, clearing agent fees, port storage after the free days, KEBS inspection, NTSA registration and number plates are extra and quoted by each provider; there is no single official rate card for most of them, so get written quotes. After arrival, budget for NTSA inspection fees where applicable and insurance (try the car insurance premium estimator). Financing? Use the car loan calculator.
Mistakes that raise the import duty on Toyota Premio imports
- Wrong model code. Clearing agents sometimes pick the closest-looking row; a higher-priced variant raises every tax line. Ask for the exact KRA row used.
- Late year of manufacture. A car made in December but registered the next year is still aged by year of manufacture in KRA’s sheet.
- Shipping too close to the cut-off. A 2019 car that arrives in 2027 falls outside the eight-year window and cannot be cleared.
- Ignoring January. Depreciation steps up with the assessment year, so the same car can attract a different figure if it is assessed in a new year.
Buying a locally used Premio instead
A Premio already registered in Kenya has paid its duty. When you buy one, budget for the NTSA transfer instead: see how to transfer vehicle ownership on NTSA. KRA also auctions seized vehicles; see KRA car auctions.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the import duty on a Toyota Premio in Kenya?
Total KRA taxes range from about KSh 563,499 (oldest allowed year, cheapest variant) to KSh 1,785,492 (2025 model, priciest variant) using the July 2025 CRSP.
Which year of Toyota Premio can I import in 2026?
2019 or newer, because of the eight-year rule (KS 1515).
Is the CRSP the price I pay for the car?
No. CRSP is KRA’s reference value used to compute duty. Your purchase price, freight and clearing are separate.
Why is a hybrid Premio taxed like petrol?
KRA lists hybrids under gasoline and taxes them by engine capacity in the same excise bands.
