Updated 7 November 2026
Choosing between a diploma vs degree in nursing in Kenya comes down to your KCSE grades, how long you can study and where you want your career to go. KMTC’s Diploma in Community Health Nursing asks for a mean grade of C and takes three and a half years. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) asks for at least C+ overall and in key subjects, and takes four academic years. Diploma nurses can later upgrade to a degree.
Checked on 7 November 2026 against KMTC’s September 2026 pre-service advertisement, KMTC’s academic programmes page, the KUCCPS advert for KMTC’s March 2026 intake and Meru University of Science and Technology’s BScN admission requirements. Each university sets its own requirements; check the institution you are applying to.

Diploma in nursing entry requirements (KMTC, 2026)
KMTC’s September 2026 advert lists these minimum requirements for the Diploma in Community Health Nursing:
- KCSE mean grade C (plain).
- C in English or Kiswahili.
- C in Biology or Biological Sciences.
- C- in any one of Chemistry, Physics or Physical Science, or Mathematics.
If you fall just short, KMTC also offers a Certificate in Community Health Nursing. It needs a mean grade of C-, with C- in English or Kiswahili and Biology, and D+ in Chemistry, Physics or Maths. KMTC’s programmes page says a certificate holder with two years of relevant work can upgrade to a diploma; for community health nursing the upgrading course lasts 18 months.
KMTC’s programmes page says most diplomas last three years, “except Community Health Nursing which lasts 3½ years”. Meeting the minimum grades does not guarantee a place, because courses are competitive.
Degree in nursing (BScN) entry requirements
Direct-entry BScN requirements are set by each university. Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), for example, asks for:
- A KCSE mean grade of at least C+.
- At least C+ in each cluster subject: English or Kiswahili, Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry and Biology (cluster A). Cluster B swaps in Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Biological Sciences.
The MUST programme takes four academic years, divided into 12 semesters of theory and clinical placements. In any diploma vs degree comparison, remember that degree places are competitive, so cut-off points are usually well above the minimum. See our list of nursing cut-off points by university.
How to apply for a nursing diploma or degree
- Check your grades against the requirements above, and against the exact course you want.
- Apply through KUCCPS. KMTC says applications for its pre-service courses are made through the KUCCPS portal. KUCCPS’s March 2026 advert directed applicants to students.kuccps.ac.ke, with a deadline of 27 January 2026 for that intake. Deadlines change each intake, so check the current advert.
- Self-sponsored degree places can also be applied for directly at universities.
- Budget for fees. Costs differ between KMTC and universities, and between government-sponsored and self-sponsored places. Our cost of studying nursing guide breaks them down.
Diploma vs degree later: upgrading from a diploma
A diploma does not close the door to a degree. MUST runs a BScN upgrading (mature entry) programme for holders of a diploma in nursing from a recognised institution who have at least two years of work experience. It lasts two and a half years (eight semesters), compared with four years for direct entry.
In the diploma vs degree decision, that means a diploma-first route can work well if your KCSE grades are below C+ or you want to start earning sooner. Working as a nurse before upgrading can also make the degree more meaningful.
Diploma vs degree in nursing: which should you choose?
- You scored C or C- in key subjects: start with the KMTC diploma (or certificate) and plan to upgrade later.
- You scored C+ or above in all cluster subjects: a BScN gets you a degree in four years. Compare it with a diploma plus upgrading, which takes longer overall but lets you work in between.
- You are interested in leadership, teaching or research: the degree route leads to these sooner. MUST says its BScN trains nurses in clinical care, research, teaching, leadership and management.

Whichever side of the diploma vs degree choice you take, practising as a nurse requires registration and a licence from the Nursing Council of Kenya after training.
