How to Buy KPLC Prepaid Tokens Using T-Kash (2026): Everything You Need to Know

You can buy Kenya Power prepaid tokens from your T-Kash wallet. Dial *160#, select Pay Bill, enter 888880, then your meter number, the amount, and your T-Kash PIN. KPLC sends the token by SMS. Enter it into your meter and the units load.

This works through interoperability with KPLC’s paybill. If you have never tried it, start with a small amount and confirm the token arrives.

Step by Step

  1. Dial *160# on your Telkom line (or open the T-Kash app).
  2. Choose Pay Bill.
  3. Enter 888880 as the business number. This is KPLC’s paybill for prepaid tokens.
  4. Enter your prepaid meter number as the account number.
  5. Enter the amount in shillings.
  6. Enter your T-Kash PIN and confirm.
  7. Wait for the SMS from KPLC with the 20-digit token. Key it into your meter.

If the menu wording differs slightly, look for the Pay Bill option and use 888880. The paybill number and meter number are what matter.

How It Works

M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and T-Kash have been interoperable for years under the Central Bank framework. A paybill on one network can usually be paid from another. That is how a T-Kash wallet reaches KPLC’s 888880.

Unlike Airtel Money, T-Kash does not appear to have a dedicated direct partnership listing with Kenya Power. The payment still goes to the same official paybill, but the experience may not be identical to M-Pesa or Airtel.

What You Need

  • A Telkom line with a registered T-Kash wallet
  • Your T-Kash PIN
  • Enough balance for the amount plus any fee
  • Your prepaid meter number (printed on the meter, usually 11 digits)

Read the meter number directly from the meter. Saved numbers or old receipts are a common source of mistakes.

The Meter Number Matters

The account field must be your prepaid meter number. Do not enter your phone number, ID number, or a postpaid account number. A token bought against the wrong meter number loads onto that other meter. Recovering it requires applying to Kenya Power for reallocation.

Check the digits twice before you enter your PIN.

Prepaid and Postpaid Use Different Paybills

  • Prepaid tokens: paybill 888880, account number = your meter number
  • Postpaid bills: paybill 888888, account number = the number on your bill

Use 888880 for a token meter.

What It Costs

There is no widely published fixed fee specifically for KPLC payments from T-Kash. The fee shown on your confirmation screen before you enter your PIN is the one that applies. Always check it.

If the Token Does Not Arrive

Give it a few minutes first. Then:

  1. Dial *977# (KPLC’s USSD) and check your recent tokens, or open the myPower app.
  2. Note the transaction ID from your T-Kash confirmation SMS and contact Telkom through its official channels.
  3. If Telkom confirms the payment went through, contact Kenya Power with the same transaction ID.

Keep the confirmation SMS until the units are loaded on your meter.

Buy Only from Official Channels

Kenya Power only authorises specific channels for prepaid tokens: paybill 888880, paybill 888888, the *977# code, the myPower app, and approved bank halls. Paying the official 888880 paybill from T-Kash is a legitimate route. Do not buy tokens from unofficial agents or third parties.

It is practical to keep a small reserve of units in case the vending system has a temporary outage.

Other Ways to Buy the Same Token

You can also buy KPLC prepaid tokens through M-Pesa (paybill 888880), Airtel Money (*334#), Equitel, *977#, the myPower app, or a bank. The token itself is identical regardless of the payment method.

Common Questions

What code do I dial for T-Kash?
*160#, then choose Pay Bill and enter 888880.

Do I need an M-Pesa account?
No. You pay from your T-Kash wallet to the same paybill.

Does it work on a basic phone?
Yes. *160# works on any handset.

Which number do I enter as the account?
The meter number printed on your prepaid meter (usually 11 digits). Not your phone number.

That covers buying KPLC prepaid tokens with T-Kash. Double-check the meter number, confirm the fee on the screen, and keep the confirmation SMS until the units appear on your meter. Start with a small test amount if it is your first time.
