Ziidi is marketed as free, and for transactions that is true. It still has costs, and they come out of the return rather than your wallet.
Charges
| Item | Charge |
|---|---|
| Investing from M-Pesa | Free |
| Withdrawing to M-Pesa | Free |
| Maintenance fee | None |
| Locking or unlocking funds | Free |
| Fund management fee | 2% a year, already taken out of the rate shown |
| Withholding tax | 15% on fund income |
How interest works
Ziidi invests in government securities such as Treasury bills and interest-earning accounts, so the rate moves every day. Interest is computed daily and added to your Ziidi balance. Money starts earning 24 hours after it lands. Under the fund terms, money received after 11am uses the next day’s rate.
Safaricom shows the current indicated rate in the M-Pesa app and on *334#. Check it there rather than relying on a figure from an old article.

Working out your earnings
Take your balance, multiply by the rate shown, then divide by 365 for an idea of one day’s interest. Remember that withholding tax applies to the income.
