If you get paid through PayPal, whether from freelance writing, design, software work, online sales or a relative abroad, you can move the money to M-Pesa in a few taps. Withdrawals from PayPal to M-Pesa usually arrive in minutes, which is much faster than waiting days for a bank transfer. This guide walks through the steps, the costs, the limits and how to solve the most common problems.

Before You Start

  • Link your accounts through the PayPal mini app in the M-Pesa app.
  • Use a Kenyan PayPal account that is verified.
  • Convert your balance to US dollars. The service works in USD only. In PayPal, go to Manage Currencies and convert euros, pounds or other currencies to USD.

Step by Step: Withdrawing to M-Pesa

  1. Open the M-Pesa app and log in.
  2. Open the PayPal mini app.
  3. Select Withdraw.
  4. Enter the amount in US dollars.
  5. Review the exchange rate and the shillings you will receive.
  6. Confirm the withdrawal.
  7. The shillings land in your M-Pesa wallet and you receive an SMS.

Fees and Limits

Item Detail
Conversion fee 3% applied on the day’s exchange rate, on top ups and withdrawals
M-Pesa paybill fee Charged on top ups only, depends on amount
Per transaction limit KSh 250,000
Daily limit KSh 500,000
Currency US dollars only on the PayPal side

On withdrawals you pay the 3% conversion fee built into the exchange rate. There is no M-Pesa paybill fee on withdrawals. Your M-Pesa wallet also has a maximum balance, so if a withdrawal would push you above it, withdraw in parts.

Watch Out for Double Conversion

If your client pays you in euros or pounds, PayPal converts that balance to dollars, usually at its own rate, before you withdraw. Then the M-Pesa side converts dollars to shillings with the 3% fee. Two conversions can eat into your earnings. Where possible, invoice clients in US dollars so you avoid the first conversion.

Tips for Freelancers

  • Plan withdrawals around your needs. Keep a dollar buffer in PayPal if you also pay for tools or subscriptions in dollars, so you are not converting back and forth.
  • Move money into savings. After withdrawing, consider putting part into a money market fund such as Ziidi so it earns interest.
  • Keep records for tax. Income from overseas clients is taxable in Kenya. Our guide to getting a KRA PIN and filing returns will help.
  • Use a stamped M-Pesa statement as proof of income when applying for loans or rentals.

Working Out What You Really Receive

To see the true cost of a withdrawal, compare the dollars that left PayPal with the shillings that arrived in M-Pesa. Divide the shillings by the dollars to get your effective rate. Compare it with the mid market rate on the same day. The gap reflects the 3% fee and any rate margin. Knowing this figure helps you set freelance rates that cover your real costs, and lets you compare M-Pesa with other options like bank withdrawals or other payout services when you receive large amounts.

It also helps to know that PayPal itself may take a fee when a client pays you, especially for international or commercial payments. That fee is separate from the withdrawal cost. Check the net amount in your PayPal activity after each payment so you know exactly what you earned before converting to shillings.

Problems and Fixes

The withdraw option does not work. Check that your balance is in USD and that your PayPal account has no limitation. PayPal sometimes places limits on accounts until extra details are confirmed.

The withdrawal failed. Check the KSh 250,000 per transaction and KSh 500,000 daily limits and your wallet balance cap.

Money left PayPal but did not reach M-Pesa. Wait a short while, then contact Safaricom with the details from the PayPal transaction.
