The Social Health Authority, or SHA, replaced NHIF in October 2024 as Kenya’s national health insurance body. Members use the SHA portal to check registration status, view contributions, add dependants and confirm what cover they have. Many people struggle with their first login or forget how they registered. This guide explains how to log in, what to do if you are not yet registered, how to fix common problems and how to stay safe from fake portals.

Before You Log In

  • You must be registered with SHA. If you are not, see our guide on what SHA is and how to register.
  • Have your National ID number, or the identification you registered with.
  • Have access to the phone number you used during registration, because a one time code is usually sent to it.

How to Log In

  1. Open the official SHA website, reached through sha.go.ke or the health services section of eCitizen.
  2. Choose the member login or self service option.
  3. Enter your ID number or other identification details as requested.
  4. Enter the one time code sent to your registered phone number, if prompted.
  5. Once logged in, review your profile, contribution status and dependants.

If you use eCitizen for other government services, logging in there first and opening SHA from the services list can be easier. Our guide to creating an eCitizen account helps if you do not have one.

What You Can Do on the Portal

Task Why it matters
Check registration status Confirms you are in the system before you need treatment
View contributions Shows whether your payments or employer deductions are up to date
Add or update dependants Spouse and children must be listed to be covered
Update contact details Ensures you receive codes and notices
Make payments For self employed members paying directly

Common Login Problems

No code received. Confirm you are using the phone number from registration and that it has network. Wait a few minutes before requesting a new code.

Details not found. You may not be registered yet, or your details may have been captured differently. Register first, or visit a Huduma Centre or SHA office with your ID.

Changed phone number. Visit an SHA office or Huduma Centre with your ID to update your number, since codes go to the old line.

Dependants missing. Add them through the portal with their birth certificate or ID details, or ask at an SHA office.

Registering by Phone

SHA has also offered registration through a USSD code on mobile phones, which helps people without internet. Check official SHA communication for the current code before using it, and never use codes shared by strangers on social media.

Contributions in Brief

Salaried workers contribute 2.75% of gross salary to the Social Health Insurance Fund, deducted by the employer, with a minimum monthly amount set by regulation. Self employed and informal workers contribute based on assessed household income. Check your payslip or the portal to confirm deductions are being remitted. Learn more about your payslip in our guides for TSC staff and civil servants on Business Radar.

Check Your Status Before You Need Care

The worst time to discover a problem with your SHA registration is at a hospital reception when you or a family member needs treatment. Log in now and confirm three things: that your registration is active, that your contributions are up to date and that every dependant you want covered is listed. If anything is missing, fix it while you are well. Hospitals check your status using your ID, and gaps can mean paying out of pocket for care that would otherwise be covered.

Staying Safe

  • Use only the official sha.go.ke site or eCitizen.
  • Never pay anyone to register you or to fix your SHA status.
  • Do not share login codes with anyone, including people who claim to work for SHA.
  • Be careful with links sent by SMS or WhatsApp. Type the address yourself.
