Kiambu County has 315 facilities on the Social Health Authority’s contracted list, from dispensaries in Gatundu North to the big referral hospitals in Thika and Kijabe. The finder below opens on Kiambu, so you can filter by sub-county, such as Thika East, Ruiru or Kikuyu, by type of facility, or by name.

Kiambu’s SHA Network in Numbers

Kiambu leans private: 202 of its 315 contracted facilities are private, 76 are county government facilities and 28 are faith-based. By level, there are 122 Level 2 facilities, 126 Level 3 health centres and clinics, 58 Level 4 hospitals and specialist clinics, and 9 Level 5 hospitals. Kiambu has no Level 6 hospital, so patients referred for national referral care usually go to Nairobi.

Level 5 Hospitals in Kiambu

  • Thika County Referral Hospital in Thika East, the county’s main public referral hospital, listed with 512 beds.
  • Thika Nursing Home Hospital, also in Thika East.
  • AIC Kijabe Hospital and AIC CURE International Hospital in Lari, both faith-based.
  • Nazareth Hospital in Limuru.
  • PCEA Kikuyu Hospital and St Peters Orthopedics and Surgical Speciality Centre in Kikuyu.
  • Saint Bridget Hospital in Kiambu town.
  • Brain Spine and Rehabilitation Hospital in Ruiru.

SHA Hospitals in Thika, Ruiru and Juja

Ruiru has the most contracted facilities in the county with 49, followed by Juja (38), Limuru (35) and Kiambu (31). Thika is split between Thika East with 28 and Thika West with 19, so choose both to see all of Thika. Kikuyu has 24, Lari 20, Kabete and Thika West 19 each, Kiambaa 17, Githunguri 15, Gatundu South 12 and Gatundu North 8.

Specialist Services

Kiambu’s list includes 10 mental health and rehabilitation centres, more than many larger counties, 13 nursing homes and cottage hospitals, 5 maternity homes, 4 eye clinics, 3 specialist medical or dental clinics, 2 dental clinics and 2 stand-alone dialysis centres.

County-Run Hospitals by Sub-County

If you want a public hospital rather than a private one, these are the county government Level 4 and Level 5 hospitals on Kiambu’s SHA list, grouped by area:

  • Thika East: Thika County Referral Hospital (Level 5, 512 beds).
  • Kiambu town: Kiambu County Referral Hospital (446 beds) and Nairobi Regional Hospital at Kahawa Garrison (150 beds).
  • Gatundu South: Gatundu County Referral Hospital (300 beds) and Karatu Level 4 Hospital.
  • Gatundu North: Igegania Sub-County Hospital (86 beds).
  • Kabete: Wangige Sub-County Hospital (150 beds) and Nyathuna Level 4 Hospital.
  • Kiambaa: Kihara Sub-County Hospital (74 beds).
  • Ruiru: Ruiru Sub-County Hospital (40 beds).
  • Kikuyu: Lusigetti Sub-County Hospital.
  • Lari: Lari Sub-County Hospital.
  • Juja: Jotram Medical Center, listed under county government ownership.

Limuru, Githunguri and Thika West have no county-run Level 4 hospital on the list, so residents there tend to use mission hospitals such as Nazareth Hospital in Limuru and Mary Help of the Sick Mission Hospital (99 beds) or St. Matia Mulumba Hospital (120 beds) in Thika West, or travel to Kiambu or Thika referral hospitals.

Mission Hospitals on the List

Kiambu has a strong network of church-run hospitals that take SHA. Besides Kijabe, CURE, Nazareth and PCEA Kikuyu, the list includes Kalimoni Mission Hospital in Juja (70 beds), Immaculate Heart of Mary Mission Hospital at Kilimambogo in Thika East, Immaculate Heart Hospital Kereita in Lari, Nazareth Ruiru Hospital, Kagondo Emmanuel Mission Hospital in Kabete and the Africa Muslims Agency health centre in Thika West.

Before You Visit

Confirm your SHA status on *147#, carry your ID and ask the facility which SHA benefits it offers. Routine care starts at Level 2 and 3 facilities; specialist care at the bigger hospitals usually needs a referral unless it is an emergency.

County hospitals raised KSh 2.01 billion for Kiambu in 2025/26; see the Kiambu County budget page for how county health money is collected and spent.
