Bungoma’s SHA Facilities in Numbers

Bungoma’s network is mainly public: 171 facilities are run by the county government, 94 are private and 17 are faith-based. By level there are 151 Level 2 facilities, 111 Level 3 health centres and clinics, 22 Level 4 hospitals and 3 Level 5 hospitals. Patients needing national referral care are usually referred to Eldoret, Kisumu or Nairobi.

Level 5 Hospitals in Bungoma

All three Level 5 hospitals are in Bungoma South:

  • Bungoma County Referral Hospital, the main public hospital, listed with 576 beds.
  • Bungoma West Hospital, private, listed with 124 beds.
  • New Elgon View Medical Cottage, private, listed with 96 beds.

SHA Facilities by Sub-County

Bungoma South leads with 49 facilities, followed by Bungoma North (35), Bumula (30), Mt Elgon (29), Webuye West (28), Kimilili (27), Bungoma Central (27), Bungoma West (22), Cheptais (22) and Bungoma East (17).

Specialist Services

Specialist stand-alone centres are few in Bungoma: the list includes 5 nursing homes and cottage hospitals, an eye clinic and a specialist medical clinic. Most specialist care, including maternity, surgery and dialysis where available, is provided by the Level 4 and Level 5 hospitals, so ask them directly about SHA cover.

Public Hospitals by Sub-County

Bungoma’s network is mostly public, and most sub-counties have a county-run Level 4 hospital on the SHA list:

  • Bungoma South: Bungoma County Referral Hospital, the main public hospital.
  • Bumula: Bumula Sub-County Hospital, listed with 130 beds.
  • Mt Elgon: Mt. Elgon Sub-County Hospital, 59 beds.
  • Cheptais: Cheptais Sub-County Hospital, 50 beds.
  • Bungoma West: Sirisia Sub-County Hospital, 50 beds.
  • Bungoma North: Naitiri Sub-County Hospital, 42 beds.
  • Webuye West: Webuye Sub-County Hospital and Bokoli Sub-County Hospital.
  • Bungoma Central: Chwele Sub-County Hospital.
  • Kimilili: Kimilili Sub-County Hospital.

Bungoma East has no Level 4 hospital on the list, only dispensaries and clinics, so patients there are usually referred to Webuye or Bungoma town.

Mission Hospitals

Four faith-based Level 4 hospitals are contracted: Friends Lugulu Hospital in Webuye West (117 beds), ICFEM Dreamland Mission Hospital in Kimilili (85), St. Damiano Mission Hospital in Bungoma South (80) and Our Lady of Peace Mission Hospital at Chebukaka in Bungoma Central (75).
