What happened to SHA offices in Westlands, Buruburu and the CBD?
Many people still search for SHA offices in Westlands, Buruburu, the CBD or Kayole because those were old NHIF branches. In 2025 The Standard reported that SHA had closed its sub-county and regional branches, including seven of the eight offices it inherited from NHIF in Nairobi, leaving the Upper Hill office as the main Nairobi service point. Because of that, do not travel to an old NHIF branch address without calling first. For a quick service near town, a Huduma Centre is usually the faster option, and for anything complicated go straight to Upper Hill.
When you actually need to visit an SHA office
You only need a physical visit when the phone, USSD or portal cannot fix the problem. Typical reasons include:
- Your name, ID number or date of birth is wrong on your SHA record and the portal will not let you edit it.
- You need to add or remove a spouse or child and the system asks for documents to be verified.
- Your employer has deducted SHIF from your pay but the contributions are not showing.
- A hospital has told you your cover is inactive even though you have paid.
- You have been asked to bring original documents for verification.
Carry your original national ID, the phone registered with SHA, birth certificates for any children you are adding, a marriage certificate or affidavit for a spouse, and recent payslips or M-Pesa statements if the problem is about payments. Going with photocopies as well as originals saves a second trip.

SHA county offices around Nairobi
If you live in a town around Nairobi, the county office may be closer than Upper Hill. These are the offices as SHA lists them:
| County | Office | Phone | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kiambu | Kiambu Mall, 1st floor | 0725 736 478 or (020) 8055793 | kiambu@sha.go.ke |
| Kajiado | Hibo House, 1st floor, Namanga Road | 0710 376 931 | kajiado@sha.go.ke |
| Machakos | Standard Bank Building, 1st floor | (044) 2021043 or (044) 2021686 | machakos@sha.go.ke |
Branch phone numbers change more often than the toll-free line, so if a county line does not go through, call 0800 720 601 and ask to be directed.
How to fix most SHA problems without a visit
- Check your status: dial *147# from the phone registered with SHA and follow the prompts to see whether you are registered and whether your cover is active.
- Register or update details: use the SHA self-service portal or *147#. Have your ID number and your dependants’ details ready.
- Pay contributions: self-employed members pay through the SHA paybill shown on the official SHA website and on the *147# menu. Work out what you owe with our SHIF calculator before you pay.
- Email for a record: if a call does not solve it, email customerservice@sha.go.ke with your ID number, phone number and a short description. Keep the reply.
- Escalate: send unresolved issues to complaints@sha.go.ke and report anyone asking for bribes or using fake numbers to fraud@sha.go.ke.
Finding an SHA hospital instead of an office
Many people searching for an “SHA office near me” really want a hospital that accepts SHA. Offices do not treat patients. Use our SHA accredited hospitals in Nairobi list, which you can filter by area and level, or the national SHA hospital finder for other counties such as Kiambu.
Opening hours and tips for the Upper Hill office
SHA lists its call centre hours as Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and government offices follow similar hours, closing on weekends and public holidays. Arrive early in the morning, especially at the start of the month when employers and members rush to sort out contributions. Upper Hill is a short matatu ride from the CBD; ask for Ragati Road or the old NHIF Building area.
