A realistic December holiday budget for a coast trip in 2026 starts at about KSh 15,000 for a couple (SGR Economy return plus three nights in a small Diani glamping house with breakfast) and rises to KSh 140,000 to KSh 190,000 for three festive nights at a Diani beach resort. The two numbers that move your budget most are the dates (resort rates more than double from 20 December to 3 January) and the train class. Transport: SGR fares for the December holiday budget
Kenya Railways’ published one-way adult fares from Nairobi to Mombasa (Miritini) are KSh 1,500 in Economy, KSh 4,500 in First Class and KSh 12,000 in Premium (KSh 20,000 Premium return). Children aged 3 to 11 pay half fare and children under three ride free without their own seat. Payment is by M-Pesa only.

Booking window: SGR tickets go on sale 60 days before travel. Seats for Saturday 19 December opened around 20 October; returns on Sunday 3 January 2027 open around 4 November 2026. If you drive to the station, overnight parking is KSh 200 a night.

BB means bed and breakfast and HB half board (breakfast and dinner). Resort rates are resident rates and need a Kenyan ID, alien card or work permit at check-in. Children’s rates were not on the sheets we read, so ask the property in writing.

The same couple at Diani Reef pays KSh 75,600 more for three nights from 20 December than for three nights up to 19 December. Travelling the week of Jamhuri Day (12 December) instead of Christmas week is the single biggest saving.
Lines to add to your budget
- Station to hotel: taxi or ride-hailing from Miritini to Bamburi or Diani; Diani trips cross the Likoni channel by ferry or use the Dongo Kundu bypass. Get a quote before you travel.
- Meals not in your rate: lunches, and dinners if you are on bed and breakfast.
- Outings: boat trips, marine park fees and attractions; pay park fees through official channels.
- Children: extra beds or child rates; or look at December holiday camps in Nairobi if only part of the family travels.
- A buffer of 10 to 15% for price changes and surprises.
How to pay less this December
- Book SGR the day sales open (60 days ahead) and book the return in the same session if it is in the window.
- Travel before 20 December or after 3 January when resort rates fall.
- Choose half board at resorts far from shops; choose bed and breakfast where restaurants are close.
- Pay deposits only to the property’s own till, paybill or bank account. Fake booking pages and “confirmed SGR seat” touts are common in December.
