Refresher courses for drivers who already have a licence

If you already hold a licence but want to build confidence, Five Star sells five-day refresher packages priced by the distance you drive each day:

Package Fee
8 km per day, 5 days KSh 4,000
10 km per day, 5 days KSh 5,000
12 km per day, 5 days KSh 6,000
14 km per day, 5 days KSh 7,000
16 km per day, 5 days KSh 8,000

The shorter packages suit first-time refreshers. The longer ones include highway driving and heavier traffic.

B1 or B2: which should you choose?

B1 lets you drive automatic cars only. B2 covers manual cars and, in practice, gives you more options for work, because many company vehicles, pick-ups and older cars are manual. If you can afford it, the combined B1 and B2 package costs only KSh 1,500 more than either single class and saves you KSh 2,000 compared with doing both separately, according to the school. If you plan to drive for a living, the B2 and C1 truck and saloon package at KSh 18,000 covers both cars and light trucks.

What you need to enrol

  • A copy of your national ID. You must be at least 18 for a car licence.
  • An eCitizen account and your KRA PIN, because the provisional driving licence (PDL) and the smart driving licence are applied for through NTSA on eCitizen. Our KRA PIN guide explains how to get one.
  • Passport-size photos, if your branch asks for them.

After passing the test, you apply for your smart driving licence on eCitizen. Our NTSA help guide covers PDL applications, test bookings and licence collection.

Is Five Star cheaper than other driving schools?

At KSh 14,000 all-inclusive for a 30-lesson car course, Five Star sits at the lower end of Nairobi prices. When comparing, always ask whether a quote includes the PDL assessment, the test fee and the learner’s manual. A cheaper quote that leaves out those items can end up costing more.
