Kilifi County has 35 county assembly wards across 7 constituencies: Kilifi North (7 wards), Kilifi South (5 wards), Kaloleni (4 wards), Rabai (4 wards), Ganze (4 wards), Malindi (5 wards), Magarini (6 wards). Each ward elects one Member of the County Assembly (MCA). This guide lists every ward with its official IEBC ward code and the number of registered voters it had for the 2022 General Election, then explains what wards do and how to find yours.
Kilifi stretches along the Indian Ocean coast from Mtwapa in the south to the Sabaki River and Magarini in the north, and inland to the dry plains of Ganze. That spread shows in its wards: busy coastal towns such as Malindi and Shimo la Tewa sit alongside large rural wards with far fewer voters.

Largest and smallest wards by voters
On the 2022 register, the three biggest wards by registered voters were Shimo la Tewa in Kilifi South (32,052), Malindi Town in Malindi (30,570), Rabai/Kisurutini in Rabai (27,195). The smallest were Kakuyuni in Malindi (8,750), Mwawesa in Rabai (8,793), Marafa in Magarini (9,026). The average ward had about 16,817 registered voters. Kilifi North constituency holds about 20 percent of the county’s voters, the largest share of any constituency.
Ward sizes differ because boundaries were drawn with population, geography and community interests in mind, not just voter numbers. Sparsely populated areas often have wards that cover a large area but hold fewer voters.
What a county assembly ward does
A ward is the smallest electoral unit in Kenya’s devolved system. Voters in each ward elect one MCA every five years at the General Election. The MCA represents the ward in the Kilifi County Assembly, where members pass county laws, approve the county budget and oversee the work of the Governor and the county executive. The assembly also has nominated members who fill the gender and special interest seats.
Wards also matter outside elections. Many county programmes are planned and shared out ward by ward, including ward development funds, bursaries for secondary and college students, and projects such as feeder roads, water points and health centres. If you apply for a county bursary, the form will usually ask for your ward, and a ward committee may vet the application. Each ward also has a county ward administrator who coordinates county services there.
How to find which ward you are in
- Check your voter registration. If you are a registered voter, send your ID number by SMS to 70000 or use the voter verification service on the IEBC website. The reply shows your county, constituency, ward and polling centre.
- Ask your chief or ward administrator. They can confirm boundaries, especially if you live near the line between two wards.
- Use the tables above. If you know the area you live in, match it to the ward and constituency listed.
When you fill in a government or county form, use the ward spelling on the IEBC list, since that is what voter and candidate records use.
Main towns and the wards around them
Kilifi town, the county headquarters, lies in Kilifi North constituency, which includes Sokoni, Kibarani and Mnarani wards. Watamu, known for its marine park and beaches, is its own ward in Kilifi North. Mtwapa and the area just north of Mombasa fall in Kilifi South, where Shimo la Tewa was the single largest ward in the county by registered voters in 2022. Malindi town is split between Malindi Town and Shella wards, and Mariakani, on the Mombasa to Nairobi highway, is a ward in Kaloleni constituency. Ganze, inland, is one of the county’s most rural constituencies.
