Kenya Seed Company (KSC) is the State owned seed producer behind most of the hybrid maize planted in the country, including household names such as H614D, H6213 and H520. It also sells wheat, sunflower, sorghum, beans, pasture and vegetable seed. The head office is in Kitale, but farmers deal with the company mainly through its regional branches, which sell seed in bulk, take complaints about poor germination and connect farmers to extension officers.

This guide lists every Kenyan branch that the company publishes on its official website, with the physical location, postal address, email and phone numbers, followed by its regional subsidiaries and some practical tips for buying genuine seed.

Several branches sit inside National Cereals and Produce Board premises (Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Meru and Karatina). That is convenient if you are also collecting subsidised fertiliser, since you can buy seed and fertiliser on the same trip. Our list of NCPB depots and their contacts helps you check the nearest store, and our guide to the functions of the NCPB explains how the subsidy programme works.

Which maize variety to ask for at your branch

Branch staff will normally ask your altitude before recommending a hybrid, because maturity period and yield depend heavily on it. The company’s published variety sheets group its maize like this:

Zone Altitude Examples Maturity Yield potential (bags per acre)
Highland 1,500 to 2,800m H614D, H628, H629, H6213, H9401 150 to 210 days 38 to 54
Medium altitude 1,000 to 1,800m H520, H624 120 to 150 days 34 to 36
Lower medium 900 to 1,500m H513, H516, H517 110 to 150 days 26 to 32
Dryland 900 to 1,700m DH01, DH02, DH04, DH08 70 to 120 days 15 to 26
Coastal lowland 0 to 1,200m PH1, PH4 75 to 120 days 20 to 26

The yields are the company’s stated potential under good management, not a promise. Most farmers get less, especially without top dressing or with late planting. KSC recommends a seed rate of 20 to 25kg per hectare for most maize varieties, which works out to roughly 8 to 10kg per acre, and says maize is generally planted in the long rains (March to May) and the short rains (October to December).

Tips for buying genuine Kenya Seed products

  • Buy from a branch or an authorised dealer. The company says its products are sold through its branches, field offices and authorised agrovets. Fake seed sold in look alike packets is a recurring problem every planting season.
  • Check the KEPHIS label. Kenya Seed says all its seed is certified by the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), and each packet carries certification details. A packet with no label or a torn seal is a warning sign.
  • Keep your receipt and the empty packet. The company says germination or quality complaints should be raised within 30 days of purchase with proof of purchase, for investigation and possible replacement.
  • Buy early. Popular highland hybrids can run short at branches close to the onset of the rains, so plan your purchase a few weeks before planting.
