A short history of Muki Sacco
According to the society, about 29 dairy farmers met at Kimwatu Farm on 29 June 1989 and agreed to form a SACCO. At the time they supplied milk to KCC, often lost milk because they had no ready market, and could not get credit from commercial banks. The society was incorporated on 29 February 1990. It started with a BOSA savings section and added a FOSA in 2000. Membership was first drawn only from dairy farmers, but the common bond was later opened to people in agribusiness, small businesses and other groups. Its motto is Pamoja Twajenga.

How to join Muki Sacco
The society lists these documents for opening an account:
- Original and copy of your national ID or passport
- A passport size photo, which is taken at the branch
- Your KRA PIN certificate
To become a full member you also buy share capital. Each Muki Sacco share is worth KSh 100, and the minimum shareholding is KSh 15,000, which the society says can be paid at once or gradually. On top of shares you build up monthly deposits, and those deposits are what your loan limit is based on.
If terms such as share capital, deposits, BOSA and FOSA are new to you, our glossary of SACCO terms for Kenyan savers explains each one in plain language.
Muki Sacco loan products
The society’s published loan limits are expressed as multiples of your member deposits:
| Loan | Limit | Key terms the society lists |
|---|---|---|
| Normal loan | Up to 3 times deposits | Longer repayment period, interest on reducing balance, secured by guarantors or other security |
| Emergency loan | Up to 3 times deposits | Repayable within 12 months, secured by guarantors |
| School fees loan | Up to 3 times deposits | Flexible repayment period, secured by guarantors |
| Biashara loan | Up to 5 times deposits | For business members, longer repayment period |
| Ng’ombe loan | Up to 10 times deposits | For buying dairy cattle and other farming needs |
| Mobile loan (e-loan) | Based on your account | Applied for on *850# or the Muki app, paperless and with no guarantors |
The society also offers asset finance, boda boda loans and LPO financing, but it does not publish interest rates on its website, so ask your branch for the current rate and all fees before you sign. A quick way to compare offers is to work out the total you will repay over the full period, not just the monthly instalment.
