Updated 21 October 2026
About 1.2 million Grade 9 learners will join senior school in January 2027, and every one of them will be placed through the Ministry of Education’s Grade 10 selection and placement system. There is no Form One selection any more. Under the competency based curriculum, learners choose a pathway, subject combinations and a list of senior schools, then the Ministry places them using a score built from their national assessments. This guide explains how the 2027 placement works, what happened during this year’s selection window, how the score is calculated and how to check where a learner has been placed.

The Three Pathways
Senior school is organised around three pathways. Each learner picks one and then chooses subject combinations within it.
- STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
- Social Sciences: humanities, languages and business related subjects.
- Arts and Sports Science: creative arts, performing arts and sports.
Not every school offers every pathway or combination. Each school declares the pathways and combinations it can teach, and the selection portal shows them, so learners and parents can see what is actually available before choosing.
How Many Schools Can a Learner Choose?
For the 2027 intake the Ministry cut the number of school choices from 12 to eight. The eight choices are spread across school categories as follows.
| Category | Type of school | Choices |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | National schools | 3 |
| C2 | Extra-county schools | 2 |
| C3 | County schools | 2 |
| C4 | Sub-county day school | 1 |
Learners also declare their preferred subject combinations. Reports on the exercise put the number of available senior school places at about 1.6 million, comfortably more than the number of learners, so every learner should get a place. The question is which one.
How the Placement Score Is Calculated
Placement uses a composite score drawn from three sets of national assessment results.
| Component | Weight |
|---|---|
| KJSEA (Grade 9) | 60% |
| School based assessments in Grades 7 and 8 | 20% |
| KPSEA (Grade 6) | 20% |
Because KJSEA carries the largest share, the assessment at the end of October matters most. Our KJSEA 2026 timetable covers the dates and what learners should expect on each day.

What Happened During the 2026 Selection Window
The selection exercise opened on 24 August 2026, the day schools reopened for third term, and was meant to close on 11 September. It ran on the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS), which struggled under nationwide traffic. Schools reported slow pages, failed submissions and data that disappeared on refresh. The Ministry relaunched the portal at midnight on Sunday, 6 September, gave schools a working window from 7 to 11 September, and then extended the exercise further because many schools had still not finished.
Alongside the relaunch, the Ministry issued directives that matter to parents:
- The selection exercise is free. Schools may not charge parents administration, computer or any other fees for it.
- Heads of junior schools must print each learner’s selection profile, have a parent or guardian sign it and keep it on file.
- Junior schools can correct errors in learner records, such as wrong gender, working with KNEC.
- Where a learner has two assessment numbers, the school must confirm the active one so that only it is used for placement.
- Schools must follow up learners who were absent during selection so no one is left out.
If your child’s school has not shown you the signed selection profile, ask for it. It is your record of the pathway, combinations and schools chosen.
How to Check Senior Schools and Combinations
The Ministry runs a public search portal for parents, guardians and learners, separate from the school login. It lets you search and filter senior schools, see whether a school is boarding or day, and view the pathways and subject combinations each school has declared. Type the address from the Ministry’s official announcements yourself and check that it ends in .go.ke.
Schools log in to the selection and placement system at selection-placement.kemis.go.ke with credentials distributed through the Sub-County Director of Education. When logging in, schools enter their KNEC code without the leading zero.
How to Check Grade 10 Placement Results
For the 2026 intake, placement results were published on the Ministry’s Grade 10 placement platform at placement.education.go.ke. Parents entered the learner’s assessment number and the junior school’s KNEC code to view the placement. Expect a similar process for 2027 once placement is announced, and wait for the Ministry’s official notice rather than links shared on social media.
- Have the learner’s KJSEA assessment number ready. It is on school records and assessment documents.
- Get the junior school’s KNEC code from the school.
- Open the official placement platform when the Ministry announces that results are live.
- Enter both numbers and accept the data privacy declaration.
- View and download the placement and the joining instructions for the school.
Placement results come after KJSEA results. Our guide on how to check KNEC results online explains how KJSEA results are checked when KNEC releases them.
Joining Instructions and Fees
Principals of public senior schools were required to update their joining instructions on the system by 13 October 2026. That included the list of required items with quantities, colours and specifications, the school’s bank account details and fees that comply with the gazette notice dated 6 February 2026. When placement is released, the joining instructions should therefore show official fees and correct bank details. Pay fees only into the school bank account listed there, never to a personal number. For current fee levels by school category, see our senior school fees guide and the wider school fees hub.
What Parents Can Do Now
- Confirm with the school that your child’s selection was saved as complete, and keep a copy of the signed profile.
- Check that the learner’s name, gender and assessment number are correct in school records.
- Help the learner prepare for KJSEA, which makes up 60% of the placement score.
- Start budgeting for reporting in January, including uniform, items on the requirements list and fees.
