Updated 21 October 2026
When national results are released, millions of candidates and parents try to check them within minutes. Knowing exactly which KNEC page to use, and what details to have ready, saves time and protects you from fake sites. This guide explains how to check KCSE and KJSEA results online, how schools access results and KPSEA reports, what to do about SMS codes, and what the grades mean. It is based on how results were released in the last cycle, and the steps for 2026 will be confirmed by the Ministry of Education on release day.
When Are Results Released?
KNEC marks the papers after the exams end, and the Education Cabinet Secretary announces the release. For reference, the 2025 KJSEA results were released on 11 December 2025 and the 2025 KCSE results on 9 January 2026. The 2026 KCSE exam ends on 20 November 2026 and KJSEA on 30 October 2026, so similar timing is likely, but only the Ministry’s announcement is final.
How to Check KCSE Results Online
- Wait for the official release announcement from the Ministry of Education or KNEC.
- Type results.knec.ac.ke into your browser.
- Enter your 11 digit KCSE index number exactly as it appears on your registration details.
- Enter your name as registered for the exam.
- Accept the data privacy notice and submit.
- View your results on screen and use the download option to save a copy.
The results shown online are provisional. Your official result slip comes through your school, and the certificate follows later.
How to Check KJSEA Results Online
For the 2025 KJSEA, KNEC’s circular gave this procedure for individual learners:
- Visit kjsea.knec.ac.ke.
- Enter the learner’s assessment number and at least one of their registered names.
- Accept the data privacy and access notice.
- View the results.
The 2025 results showed each learner’s performance level in every subject and their overall performance in the three senior school pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports. These feed into placement in Grade 10.
How Schools Get Results
Heads of institutions can download their whole centre’s results. For KJSEA last year, KNEC told heads to log into the CBA portal at cba.knec.ac.ke, open the Results menu and click the download link. KNEC also said it would send printed results to assessment centres, showing each learner’s assessment number, name, gender, subject levels and pathway performance. Secondary schools download KCSE results through the KNEC portal used for registration.
What About KPSEA?
The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), sat in Grade 6, is not used to rank or place learners. Its reports are handled through schools via the CBA portal, so parents should ask their child’s school for the KPSEA report rather than searching for a public results checker. Be cautious of websites claiming to offer KPSEA results by name.

Can You Check Results by SMS?
Be careful here. In past years, posts promoting SMS shortcodes have circulated, and KNEC has publicly warned against at least one misleading SMS claim. For the 2025 KJSEA, reports said the Ministry provided an SMS option, sending the assessment number to 22263 at KSh 30 per SMS, to check the schools a learner was placed in. Because SMS arrangements can change each year, only use a shortcode that the Ministry of Education or KNEC announces on release day, and ignore codes shared on social media.
What Your KCSE Grade Means
| Grade | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A to E | The normal grading scale, with A the highest and E the lowest, including plus and minus grades |
| X | Absent from the examination |
| Y | Results cancelled because of an examination irregularity |
| W | Results withheld, for example pending investigation |
For university entry, a mean grade of C+ and above has traditionally been the minimum for direct degree placement. To see where your grades could take you, read how KUCCPS cluster points are calculated and compare them with last year’s KUCCPS cut-off points.
What KJSEA Levels Mean
KJSEA does not use letter grades. Each subject is reported as a performance level on the competency based scale, from exceeding expectations down to below expectations, with points attached. KNEC’s results circular to schools explains the descriptors, and the learner’s pathway scores show which senior school direction suits them best.
Tips for Release Day
- Keep the index number or assessment number written down at home, not only on the school’s records.
- The portal may be slow in the first hours. Try again later rather than paying anyone to check for you.
- Type the address yourself and make sure it ends in .ac.ke.
- Save or screenshot your results, then collect the official slip from school.
- If your results show a problem, such as a missing subject, contact your school first so it can raise the issue with KNEC.
What Comes Next
After KCSE, the next step for most students is the KUCCPS application for universities, colleges and TVETs.
