If you earned income in Kenya, KRA expects you to file an income tax return for the year, even when tax was already deducted through PAYE. First-time filers do this on iTax after they have a PIN.

Deadlines and return types can change with the Finance Act each year. Use the return type iTax offers for your situation, and confirm the due date on KRA’s notices for that year.

Before you file

  • KRA PIN and iTax password
  • P9 form from your employer (if employed)
  • Records of other income (business, rental, interest) if any
  • Details of reliefs you qualify for

Basic filing flow

  1. Log in at itax.kra.go.ke.
  2. Open Returns and select the income tax return for individuals for the correct year.
  3. Import or enter employment income from your P9 where the form allows.
  4. Add other income sections that apply. Leave sections blank only when they truly do not apply.
  5. Review tax computation, reliefs and any balance due or refund.
  6. Submit the return and download the acknowledgement.
  7. If a balance is due, generate a payment slip and pay through the channels KRA lists (including paybill options shown on the slip).

Filed the wrong figures? See how to file an amended return. For refunds, read KRA tax refunds.
