How to Get a Golf Handicap in Kenya (WHS): Steps, Rules and Costs

Golf handicap in Kenya

Updated 1 November 2026

To get a golf handicap in Kenya you must be a member of a golf club affiliated to the Kenya Golf Union (KGU), then hand in signed, hole-by-hole scorecards for at least 54 holes (three 18-hole rounds, six 9-hole rounds, or a mix), each certified by a marker. A golf handicap in Kenya is valid worldwide. Your home club’s Handicap Committee then issues a World Handicap System (WHS) Handicap Index, which can be no higher than 54.0 and is valid anywhere in the world.

The short version: 5 steps to a Kenyan handicap

  1. Join a KGU-affiliated club. Only members of affiliated clubs (or of a society handicapped directly by the KGU) can hold a handicap. The KGU lists 36 courses across Nairobi, Mt Kenya, Central Rift, Coast and Western regions; see our list of golf clubs in Kenya.
  2. Name your home club. If you belong to more than one club, choose one as your home club. It keeps your scoring record and Handicap Index. Tell all your clubs which one it is.
  3. Learn the basics and play with a marker. Every round you submit must be played under the Rules of Golf, with at least one other person who can mark and sign your card.
  4. Return 54 holes of cards. Three 18-hole cards, six 9-hole cards, or any combination adding up to 54 holes, played on tees that have a current Course Rating and Slope Rating.
  5. Get your Handicap Index. The Handicap Committee issues your initial index (maximum 54.0). The KGU gives each golfer a unique number tied to their home club, which lets you check your index on your phone.

What counts as an acceptable score?

Under the KGU’s WHS rules a score counts for handicap purposes if the round is:

  • played over 9 or 18 holes in an authorised format: individual stroke play, Stableford, par/bogey or maximum score;
  • played with at least one other person who acts as your marker;
  • played under the Rules of Golf;
  • played from a set of tees with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating.

Match play, foursomes and four-ball scores do not count. For casual rounds (called “general play”), you must pre-register your intention to submit the score before you tee off, following your club’s procedure.

Handicap Index vs Course Handicap

Your Handicap Index is a single decimal number that travels with you. Before each round it is converted into a Course Handicap for the tees you play, using the formula the KGU publishes:

Course Handicap = Handicap Index x Slope Rating / 113

113 is the Slope Rating of an “average” course. On harder tees (slope above 113) your Course Handicap is higher than your index; on easier tees it is lower. You do not need to do the maths: each club displays a conversion chart, and the KGU publishes conversion charts for all affiliated clubs on its WHS Conversion page.

How your index is calculated after that

When Kenya moved from the old CONGU system to WHS, the KGU explained that the index is the average of the best eight of your last 20 scores. As you add scores, the system updates automatically and adjusts for playing conditions on the day, guarding against big swings. Your home club’s Handicap Committee can also adjust your initial index if it is not a true reflection of your ability.

When Kenya moved to WHS

The KGU launched the World Handicap System in Kenya on January 28, 2021, replacing CONGU, which Kenya had used for about 15 years. All affiliated clubs now use WHS. Golfers who already had CONGU handicaps were converted using their existing records.

What to write on your scorecard

The Rules of Golf require you to show your correct handicap on your card. KGU policy is that you comply if you enter any one of these correctly: your Handicap Index, your Course Handicap, or your Playing Handicap. Most Kenyan clubs have redesigned their cards with boxes for each.

What does it cost?

We could not find a separate fee for an initial handicap published on the KGU website; the main cost is club membership, because you need a home club. Entrance fees vary hugely, from top Nairobi clubs costing over KSh 1 million (see Muthaiga Golf Club membership fees and Karen Country Club membership fees) to much cheaper clubs outside Nairobi. Ask each club for its membership and handicap requirements. You will also pay green or competition fees for the rounds you play; see golf green fees in Nairobi.

Keeping your handicap

Once you have a Handicap Index, the KGU says you only lose it if you stop being a member of a golf club. Keep submitting acceptable scores, play by the rules, and tell the Handicap Committee about any mistakes in your record.
