The chit deposit is money held against your bar and restaurant account (members sign “chits” rather than paying cash), so it is not a fee you lose, but you need it in hand on day one.

Who can join Muthaiga Golf Club?

Muthaiga Golf Club describes itself as a private, member-owned corporate and family club, often called the “Home of Golf” in Kenya. It lists five membership categories:

  • Full membership for people living in Nairobi who want to play and use the club regularly.
  • Country membership for members living outside Nairobi.
  • Overseas membership for members based abroad.
  • Expatriate membership for diplomats, business people or international employees who do not ordinarily live in Kenya, for a term of up to three years.
  • Temporary membership for people living more than 100km from the club, for less than three months in a year. Temporary members pay no entrance fee but cannot enter competitions or sign in guests.

The club does not publish country or overseas membership fees online. If you are in either group, ask the General Manager’s office for the current schedule.

How to join: the full-membership process step by step

  1. Find a proposer. A current member who has held membership for more than three years, with no overdue arrears on their account, must propose you. A seconder is also needed.
  2. Introduction letter. Your proposer writes to the General Manager introducing you and receives a Proposer’s Form, which the proposer and seconder sign and return.
  3. Application form and fee. The club sends the application form, which you fill in yourself and return with the KSh 20,000 (single) or KSh 40,000 (joint) application fee.
  4. Documents. The checklist asks for your CV, copies of academic certificates, two passport photos, a copy of your ID or passport, the signed proposer’s form and the proposer’s introduction letter. For joint membership both spouses provide their own.
  5. Membership committee. You meet the membership committee with your proposer.
  6. Notice board. Your name is posted on the club notice board for at least 30 days, so members can raise objections.
  7. Board introduction and ballot. Your proposer introduces you to the Board of Directors, after which you are balloted.
  8. Pay within 30 days. Once elected, pay the entrance fee and chit deposit within 30 days.

The club’s checks on proposers are strict: the official-use section of the form records whether the proposer and seconder have been members for three years, whether their accounts are clear over 90 days, and how many candidates each has introduced that year.

Expatriate membership process

Expatriates follow a shorter route. You fill in an application form and attach a letter of introduction from your employer if you are an international employee. Once processed you pay the annual fees within 30 days and join on a three-month probation, during which you meet at least three members of the Membership and Disciplinary committee and the General Manager.

Junior membership conversion

Junior members can convert to full membership at age 25, with a parent as proposer, by filling in the full membership forms. The club’s form gives a discount on the entrance fee for long-standing juniors (for example, juniors of more than five years pay a percentage of the full fee), so ask the club for the exact percentage that applies to you.

What membership gets you

Membership gives you the 18-hole championship course, which hosted the Magical Kenya Open on the DP World Tour from 2022 to 2025, plus the club’s social facilities. The club says it has reciprocal arrangements with more than 10 clubs in Kenya, East Africa, South Africa, Europe and the Far East, which is useful if you travel for work.

Other costs to budget for

  • Caddie fees and competition entry fees.
  • Food and drinks billed to your chit account.
  • Guest green fees when you bring visitors. See our check of golf green fees in Nairobi.
  • Equipment and lessons if you are new to the game.

How Muthaiga compares with other clubs
