Ports DT Sacco paid members 20% on share capital and 12.5% interest on deposits for 2025, the same as the year before. The results were presented at its Annual Delegates Meeting at Ports Sacco Plaza in Mombasa. Put your figures into the calculator below to see what those rates would earn you.

Rates are what was last published, gross of tax. Money market funds are compounded monthly; bills, bonds, deposits and SACCO returns are worked out as simple interest. Your actual return will differ.

By default the calculator uses 12.5%, the deposit rate. To estimate the dividend, enter your share capital and change the rate to 20%. It also subtracts the 5% withholding tax.

From Harbour Workers’ Savings Club to National Sacco

The Sacco began in 1966, when employees of the East African Harbours and Railways Corporation in Mombasa formed a savings co-operative. Two changes turned it into a national institution:

  • 2010: the common bond was widened beyond port workers to salaried employees, chamas and other informal groups, companies, sole proprietors and Kenyans in the diaspora.
  • 2023: it rebranded from Mombasa Port Sacco to Ports DT Sacco.

In 2025 it began serving teachers on the TSC payroll through check-off, and it added suppliers to the Kenya Ports Authority, who can now get LPO financing for working capital. It has offices in Mombasa, Voi, Nairobi and Kisumu.

Revenue rose 15.61% to KSh 1.81 billion. Active membership grew 26.58% to more than 15,500, which was well above the 15.8% growth of the year before. Delegates also recommended a review of the surplus retention policy so that reserves keep pace with growth.

Example Payout

Ports has a high minimum share capital of KSh 40,000, so the dividend makes up a bigger part of a typical member’s return here than at Saccos with small share requirements. KSh 40,000 in shares earns KSh 8,000 at 20%. Add KSh 120,000 in deposits at 12.5%, which is KSh 15,000, and the total comes to KSh 23,000 before tax, or KSh 21,850 after the 5% withholding tax.
