About Occidental Insurance

Occidental Insurance is a general insurer headquartered in Nairobi. It says it is licensed and regulated by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and has been in business for more than 30 years. It does not sell life cover. Its products fall into four groups:

• Personal and family: motor private (third party only and comprehensive), domestic package for your house and contents, travel insurance and personal accident cover.
• Business: WIBA (Work Injury Benefits Act) cover, group personal accident, burglary, money, electronic equipment, plate glass, and political violence and terrorism cover.
• Liability: public liability, employers’ liability, professional indemnity, fidelity guarantee and carriers’ liability.
• Transport, fire and engineering: motor commercial, marine, goods in transit, fire and allied perils, and engineering policies such as contractors’ all risks.

Outside Nairobi and Mombasa, Occidental sells through agents and brokers around the country. Its FAQ says you can buy cover directly from the company or from its agents and brokers, and you can make a claim through the agent or broker who sold you the policy.

How to Pay Your Occidental Premium With M-Pesa

Occidental’s premium payments page gives these steps:

1. Open the M-Pesa menu and choose Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill.
2. Enter business number 910200.
3. Enter account number 2110051949.
4. Enter the amount and your M-Pesa PIN, then confirm.
5. Email the payment details to accounts.dept@occidental-ins.com, quoting your vehicle registration number or policy number so the payment is matched to your policy.

Be aware that the footer of the same website also shows paybill 516600 with account 930030. The company’s payment disclaimer says all payments must go to the registered paybill 910200 (account 2110051949) or to its bank accounts, so use 910200 unless the company tells you otherwise in writing, and call 0709 896 000 if you are unsure. Never Pay a Person

Occidental’s disclaimer says its policy strictly prohibits staff from asking for or accepting unofficial payments, and that it is not liable for money paid to a third party or staff member. If anyone asks you to pay into a personal number, report it to 0709 896 000 or enquiries@occidental-ins.com.

Motor Vehicle Inspection

Occidental inspects vehicles before it insures them, and may inspect again if your cover lapsed and you are renewing late, if you change the type of policy or owner, or if you add accessories you want covered. The inspection centre is on the 2nd floor of Crescent Business Centre, Parklands Road. Call the inspection officer on 0798 315 734 to book. If you are outside Nairobi, the company says it can arrange an inspection near you. The service is free.

How to Report a Motor Claim

Occidental’s accident guide lists the first steps after a crash:

1. Check that you and your passengers are safe and call for first aid or emergency help if anyone is hurt.
2. Get medical attention.
3. Take photos of the vehicles and the scene, and collect witnesses’ names and contacts.

Claim forms can be downloaded from the website’s documents section or collected at any office. The FAQ also confirms you can claim towing charges after an accident if you can show proof that you paid them.

Windscreen Claims

Windscreen damage has its own online claim form, asking for the policy number, vehicle details, a description of the damage, the garage and the replacement cost. The form warns that once you claim, the windscreen extension ends and must be reinstated by paying an extra premium. Write to the company with payment if you want it back.

Other Policy Rules Worth Knowing

• Cancelling: you can cancel a general insurance policy by emailing your agent, broker or Occidental, or by calling 0709 896 000. You get a proportionate refund of the premium.
• Transferring: a policy cannot be transferred to another person. A new owner of your car needs a new policy.
• Two policies: the FAQ says you can hold two policies and claim under both.
• Home contents: keep an inventory and receipts. For domestic package claims after fire or theft, Occidental only pays for items you can show were yours.
