The Sovereign Hotel in Kisumu’s Milimani area has changed hands and is rebranding as Le Sovereign Suites under its new owner, Nairobi-based businessman Sam Wakiaga, who has taken over as chairman. The new management plans major upgrades with the aim of turning the property into a six-star facility and a leading stop on the Western Kenya tourism circuit.

The hotel sits in Milimani, one of Kisumu’s quieter upmarket neighbourhoods, close to the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary on the shores of Lake Victoria and about 15 minutes’ drive from Kisumu International Airport. Before the sale, it marketed itself as a five-star boutique hotel set in landscaped gardens away from the bustle of the city centre, with its address on Aput Lane off Lolwe Drive.

What the new owner plans

Wakiaga said the region has immense potential and that he wants Le Sovereign Suites to be a premier destination for visitors to Western Kenya. He pointed to the hotel’s location near the Impala Sanctuary and the airport as key selling points, and said the hotel would also go after travellers from the wider East African Community market.

He also said the hotel would hire both young Gen Z workers and experienced hospitality professionals, so that older staff can train the younger ones and keep service standards high. He encouraged more investors to look at opportunities in the Kisumu region, saying the market was ripe for further development.

Rooms and facilities

According to General Manager Maurice Lusambili, Le Sovereign Suites has 35 deluxe rooms in single, double and twin options, along with lake-view rooms. Each room measures at least 44 square metres and includes a lounge area, a work desk and a small balcony.

Why Kisumu’s hotel market is drawing investors

Kisumu is Kenya’s third city and the main business hub for the Lake Victoria region. Its airport handles direct flights from Nairobi. The city has also become a regular venue for national and regional events, which brings in conference delegates who need mid and upper-range rooms.

A change of ownership and a rebrand, as at the Sovereign, lets an established property reposition itself for that higher-end market without the cost of a new building. For the wider picture on visitor numbers and hotel occupancy, see our report on Kenya’s tourist arrivals and hotel bookings.

Kisumu’s growth is also visible in other sectors. Our coverage of the Kisumu County budget shows where the county is spending on roads, water and markets, and the Mamba Cement grinding plant in Awasi, Nyando is one of several industrial projects in the wider county.

Jobs at the hotel

The new owners said the upgrade would create jobs for both young people and experienced staff. Hotels in Kisumu usually advertise front office, housekeeping, kitchen and food and beverage roles locally and on job boards. Update

Since the rebrand, the hotel has been trading as Le Sovrain Suites Hotel, the spelling now used on its official website, which describes it as a boutique hotel located along Aput Road, opposite Nyanza Club, in Kisumu. Hospitality staff profiles also list the operating company as Le’ Sovrainsuites Ltd, formerly Sovereign Hotel. Travellers looking for the old Sovereign Hotel should search for Le Sovrain Suites when booking.

To get there from Kisumu International Airport, the drive into Milimani takes about 15 minutes. From the central business district, Milimani is a short taxi or boda boda ride west of the town centre, near the Nyanza Club and the Impala Sanctuary. Guests travelling by road from Nairobi can use the Nakuru and Kericho route, and long-distance shuttles drop passengers at the main Kisumu stage, from where a taxi to the hotel takes a few minutes. If you plan to visit the Impala Sanctuary, it is close enough to walk or take a short ride from the hotel.
