Quick answer
Legit online work for Kenyans, such as writing, virtual assistance, design and data work, can be paid to M-Pesa through Upwork, which supports direct M-Pesa withdrawals of up to KSh 70,000 per transaction, or through PayPal linked in the M-Pesa app for a 3% fee. Never pay a fee to get an online job.
Updated 19 October 2026
The online jobs that pay Kenyans through M-Pesa are mostly real freelance and remote work: writing, virtual assistance, design, data work, digital marketing and similar tasks, done for clients on platforms such as Upwork or paid into PayPal and then moved to M-Pesa. What makes a job legit is not the payout method but who is paying and how. This guide covers the routes that actually move money into M-Pesa, the kinds of work Kenyans do, where to train for free, and the warning signs of the scams that copy them.

How Online Earnings Reach Your M-Pesa
There are two well-established routes that are confirmed by the companies involved.
1. Upwork direct to M-Pesa
Upwork lets freelancers in Kenya add M-Pesa as a withdrawal method. According to Upwork’s help centre, you go to Settings, then Withdrawals, choose Add a method, select M-Pesa and enter your details. For security, the new method becomes active after three days. Your first and last name must match exactly on your M-Pesa account and your verified Upwork profile, or the withdrawal will fail. Upwork notes that M-Pesa limits each withdrawal to KSh 70,000, so larger balances need several withdrawals.
2. PayPal to M-Pesa through the M-Pesa app
Many international clients and platforms pay into PayPal. Safaricom’s M-Pesa PayPal service lets you link the two accounts and withdraw your PayPal balance straight to M-Pesa. Safaricom says transfers are processed instantly, the money is converted from US dollars to shillings at the daily rate, and a fee of 3% applies on withdrawals and top-ups. Both accounts must be in your own name, and standard M-Pesa limits of KSh 250,000 per transaction and KSh 500,000 a day apply.
Since July 2025, the link is done inside the M-Pesa app. HapaKenya and The Kenya Times reported that the older PayPal Mobile Money website was shut down on 16 August 2025, and Safaricom warned users to transfer only through the official app to avoid fake sites.
Types of Legit Online Work Kenyans Do
The work itself is the same as anywhere in the world. These are the categories with the most demand, and the skills they need.
- Writing and editing. Blog posts, product descriptions, reports and proofreading. You need strong English and the ability to research and meet deadlines.
- Virtual assistance. Managing email, calendars, customer queries and bookings for busy clients abroad. Reliability and good communication matter more than formal qualifications.
- Data entry and spreadsheets. Cleaning lists, building Excel or Google Sheets reports and simple dashboards. Excel skills are one of the free Ajira Digital training tracks.
- Graphic design. Logos, social media graphics and presentations using tools such as Canva, Photoshop or AI design tools.
- Digital marketing and SEO. Running social media pages, writing ads, and helping websites rank on Google.
- Transcription and translation. Turning audio into text, or translating between English, Kiswahili and other languages.
- Tech work. Web development, app testing and IT support for clients who can pay higher rates.
- Online tutoring. Teaching subjects or languages to students over video calls.
How to Get Started Without Paying Anyone
- Pick one skill and build samples. Clients hire on proof. Two or three good samples beat a long CV.
- Train for free with Ajira Digital. The government-backed Ajira Digital programme, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, offers free registration and training at ajiradigital.go.ke and at Ajira youth centres. In February 2026, Ajira trainings resumed with virtual classes covering Excel, freelancing readiness, AI graphic design, digital marketing and SEO, and financial markets. Registration is free, so never pay anyone who claims to charge an Ajira fee.
- Create a profile on a reputable platform. Use your real name, the same name that is on your ID and M-Pesa, so withdrawals go through.
- Set up your payout method early. Add M-Pesa on Upwork or link PayPal in the M-Pesa app before your first job, so the three-day activation hold does not delay your pay.
- Start small and collect reviews. Early five-star reviews matter more than early pay. Rates usually rise once you have a track record.
- Look locally too. Kenyan companies also hire remote and hybrid staff. Browse current vacancies on jobinkenya.co.ke, and prepare your papers with our checklist of documents you need before applying for jobs.

How to Spot a Fake “Online Job”
Scams that promise easy M-Pesa income are common, and many use the names of real companies. Walk away if you see any of these signs:
- You are asked to pay to start. Registration fees, “activation” fees, training kits or deposits to unlock tasks are the clearest sign of a scam. Real clients pay you, not the other way round.
- Someone asks for your M-Pesa PIN or a code sent to your phone. No employer or platform needs your PIN. Sharing it lets fraudsters empty your account.
- Pay for clicking, liking or “rating” products. Task apps that pay small amounts first and then ask you to deposit larger sums to continue are a known fraud pattern.
- The recruiter only talks on WhatsApp or Telegram and avoids video calls, written contracts or a company email address.
- Promises of guaranteed daily income with no skills required.
- Requests to receive and forward money. Moving money for strangers can make you part of a fraud.
Keep all payments and communication on the platform until you trust a client. Platforms such as Upwork can only protect payments made through their own system.
Fees and Taxes to Plan For
Online earnings are rarely received in full. Budget for the platform’s own service fee, the 3% PayPal to M-Pesa fee where it applies, exchange rate differences, and any M-Pesa charges for withdrawing cash. Keep your M-Pesa statements, which you can download using our guide to getting an M-Pesa full statement, as a record of what you earned.
Income from online work is taxable in Kenya like other income. Get a KRA PIN, keep records of what you earn and what you spend on the work, and file your annual return. Our guide on how to get a KRA PIN walks you through registration, and our explainer on what KRA taxes on M-Pesa transfers covers the mobile money side.
Why So Many Kenyans Are Looking
Side income has become a priority for many households. TransUnion’s consumer survey for the second quarter of 2026 found that only 30% of Kenyans saw their income rise, with side jobs among the ways people are making up the gap, as we reported in our story on the TransUnion consumer pulse. Online work can help, as long as you treat it as real work and keep away from schemes that ask you to pay first.
