The MMUST student portal at portal.mmust.ac.ke is where students at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega handle most of their university admin: updating their profile, booking a hostel, checking fees and printing receipts. This guide explains how to create and log in to your portal account, what each main section does and how fee payment works through the portal and the JIUNGE app.

Before you start: the admissions portal and the student portal

MMUST runs two separate systems, and new students often mix them up.

  • Admissions portal (admission.mmust.ac.ke). This is where you download your admission letter before joining. You create an account with your surname, other names and email, and your KCSE index number in the format index number/year, for example 12345678/2024.
  • Student portal (portal.mmust.ac.ke). This is the one you use once you have a university registration number. Everything below is about this portal.

If you are still choosing a course, see our guide to MMUST courses, cut-offs and how to apply, and our explainer on checking your KUCCPS placement results.

How to create your MMUST portal account

MMUST’s own FAQ gives these steps for creating an account:

  1. Open portal.mmust.ac.ke in Chrome or Firefox.
  2. Click Create Account or Sign Up.
  3. Enter your university registration number, exactly as it appears on your admission letter.
  4. Enter a password and re-enter it to confirm.
  5. Select Student as your role if asked, then click Submit.
  6. Open your MMUST student email and click the activation link.
  7. Go back to the portal and log in with your registration number and new password.

Your student email is created by the university, and its address is based on your registration number at the student.mmust.ac.ke domain. Earlier instructions for first years gave a default email password, which you should change as soon as you log in. If the portal shows a captcha error your browser does not support, the university’s own guide says you can ignore it and continue.

Admission guidelines for the 2025 intake also describe a quicker first login, where new students enter their registration number in capital letters as both the username and the password. If that works for you, change the password immediately under your profile.

How to log in

  1. Go to portal.mmust.ac.ke.
  2. Enter your registration number as the username, in capital letters.
  3. Enter your portal password.
  4. Click Login.

Keep access to your student email, because the portal sends account messages such as the activation link there.

Complete your profile first

MMUST’s fee payment guide notes that the menu on the right of the portal only shows every tab once your student profile is complete. Click Profile and fill in your personal details, contacts and next of kin. Admission guidelines say updating your profile is part of completing online registration, so new students should do it in their first days.

What you can do on the portal

Section What it is for
Profile Personal details, contacts and next of kin, required before other tabs appear
Hostel booking Book an on-campus room in the booking window

Booking a hostel

On the portal, click Hostel Booking, choose the semester session, pick a hostel and a room, then click Submit. For the 2025 intake, booking for government sponsored first years opened from 1 to 10 August 2025 on a first come, first served basis. After booking, pay the accommodation fee and show the receipt to the Finance Department when you report. Students who do not get a room have to arrange private accommodation. MMUST’s hostel booking desk can be reached on 0702597360 or 0733120020, or at hostelbooking@mmust.ac.ke.

How to pay fees through the portal

  1. Click My Fees, choose the fee type and click Pay.
  2. An invoice appears. To pay everything, click Generate Invoice. To pay in instalments, click Edit Amount, enter what you can pay, save and then generate the invoice.
  3. Choose Pay Now or scan the QR code.
  4. Click Pay with Pesaflow, then select M-Pesa.
  5. Enter the phone number paying, click Initiate Payment and enter your M-Pesa PIN on the prompt.
  6. Go back and click Complete, then Print Receipt. Use Print to PDF to keep a copy.

MMUST warns that transaction charges may apply, so keep a little extra on your M-Pesa.

Paying with the JIUNGE app

MMUST also directs students to the JIUNGE platform for tuition and accommodation fees. Download the JIUNGE app or visit jiunge.com, sign up with your name, phone number, email and password, verify the OTP sent to your email, search for Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and add it. Enter your registration number, open View Services, choose Tuition or Accommodation and pay. Receipts are kept under My Payments.

To confirm a payment, log in to the student portal and check your fee statement. If it does not show, contact the Finance Office with your payment confirmation details.

If you are funding your studies with a loan, see our guides on the HELB student portal and registering on the HEF portal. Looking for part time work or attachment while you study? Check listings on jobinkenya.co.ke.
