No website pays you simply for having M-Pesa. What actually works in 2026 is ordinary freelance and remote work for clients who pay through a platform, with the money then moved to your phone. Some routes are direct, such as Upwork’s own M-Pesa withdrawal. Others take a step in between, such as Fiverr paying into PayPal, which you then send to M-Pesa through Safaricom’s PayPal link. This guide sorts the work Kenyans do by how the money gets home, so you can pick a platform knowing what you will receive.

We first covered this topic in our 2025 guide to legit online jobs that pay via M-Pesa, which is still a useful list of job types. This 2026 update concentrates on the payment routes, which have changed more than the work itself.

Route 1: Upwork, Straight to M-Pesa

Upwork is the cleanest option for Kenyans because it pays to M-Pesa without a middleman. Its help centre lists Kenya and M-Pesa under its direct to wallet withdrawal method. You add it under Settings, then Withdrawals, then Add a method. The method only becomes active three days later for security reasons, and your first and last names must match exactly on M-Pesa and on your verified Upwork profile.

According to Upwork’s fees and timing page, most wallet withdrawals arrive within minutes. Upwork charges a withdrawal fee, and because you receive shillings, the exchange rate it applies already includes its conversion cost. The exact fee and the per-withdrawal limit are shown in your account when you add M-Pesa or make a withdrawal, so check them there before you plan around a figure.

Work that does well on Upwork: writing and editing, virtual assistance, customer support, bookkeeping, web development, design and data work. Clients there tend to hire for longer contracts, which suits people who want steady monthly income.

Route 2: Fiverr, via PayPal or Payoneer

Fiverr does not pay to M-Pesa directly. Its payout page lists four options: PayPal (no Fiverr fee, $1 minimum, about 24 hours), bank transfer through Payoneer ($1 fee, $20 minimum), a Payoneer account ($3 fee, $10 minimum) and the Fiverr Revenue Card, which closed to new users in December 2022. You can withdraw up to $5,000 per transaction.

For most Kenyan sellers the shortest path to a phone is Fiverr to PayPal, then PayPal to M-Pesa. Safaricom’s M-Pesa PayPal FAQ says withdrawals carry a 3% conversion fee. Our step-by-step guide on withdrawing from PayPal to M-Pesa walks through linking the accounts.

Work that does well on Fiverr: fixed-price “gigs” such as logo design, CV writing, video editing, voice-overs, social media graphics and translation between English and Kiswahili. Buyers pick a package, so clear samples matter more than a long proposal.

Route 3: Any Client Who Pays Into PayPal

Many small businesses abroad, online publishers and individual clients simply send money to a PayPal address. Once it lands, the same Safaricom link moves it to M-Pesa. This route works for direct clients you find on LinkedIn or through referrals, and it lets you skip platform commissions. The trade-off is that you lose the platform’s dispute protection, so ask for part of the fee upfront on new jobs.

Route 4: Local Remote Work Paid in Shillings

Not every online job is foreign. Kenyan companies hire remote customer care agents, content moderators, social media managers, sales callers and transcribers, and pay through payroll to a bank account or straight to M-Pesa. These roles come with a contract and statutory deductions, which makes them steadier than gig work. Our sister site JobInKenya lists current openings, including remote and BPO roles, and its free job alerts can send matching vacancies by email.

Which Route Suits You

Route How money reaches M-Pesa Best for
Upwork Direct M-Pesa withdrawal Ongoing contracts, skilled services
Fiverr PayPal, then M-Pesa (3% Safaricom fee) Fixed-price creative and quick tasks
Direct foreign clients PayPal, then M-Pesa People with a portfolio and referrals
Kenyan remote employers Payroll to bank or M-Pesa Steady monthly pay with a contract

Scams That Copy These Jobs

The demand for online work has made it easy to fake. Walk away if anyone asks you to pay a “registration”, “activation” or “training” fee before you can start, sends you money and asks you to forward part of it, or promises fixed daily pay for liking posts or watching videos. Real platforms make money from commissions on completed work, not from charging workers to join. Never share your M-Pesa PIN or the codes Upwork, Fiverr or PayPal send to your phone, since those codes are how accounts get taken over.

Getting Started This Week

Pick one skill you can already deliver, build three samples, and open a profile on one platform rather than five. Set up your withdrawal method early, because Upwork’s three-day activation and the name-matching rule catch many first-timers on the day they want their money. Keep records of what you earn, as freelance income is taxable, and track your M-Pesa costs with our M-Pesa charges calculator once the money lands.
