Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) is one of the private universities most often shortlisted by students who want a nursing degree, and the first question families ask is how much it will cost. The honest answer is that KeMU does not publish a single nursing fee table on its public website. Instead, it sends each admitted student a fee structure with the admission letter, and the amount depends on whether you are placed by KUCCPS or join as a privately sponsored student. This guide explains how KeMU nursing fees work, what the programme involves, the entry grades, the official payment accounts and the steps to get the current fee structure before you commit.

How KeMU nursing fees are set
KeMU runs on trimesters, so fees are billed per trimester rather than per year. The university’s service charter says teaching and examinations are charged “as per fee structure”, and its admissions page directs newly admitted students to download the fee structure together with the admission letter and joining instructions. In practice, that means the figure that applies to you is the one on your own admission documents, not a number copied from a website.
Two things change what you pay:
- How you were admitted. Students placed by KUCCPS are government sponsored, and part of their cost is met through the government’s university funding arrangements, with the household share set on admission. Privately sponsored (self-sponsored) students pay the full programme cost set by KeMU.
- Which nursing programme you take. The Direct Entry degree for KCSE leavers runs for 12 trimesters full time at the Meru campus. The Upgrade programme for diploma nurses is shorter and is offered part time or by distance learning, so its trimester charges and total cost are different.
You will see a trimester-by-trimester nursing fee table repeated on several Kenyan blogs. None of those figures appear on KeMU’s own website, and some of the pages carrying them are several years old. Treat any figure you find online as a rough guide only, and confirm the current amount with the university before you budget or pay.
What to budget for besides tuition
Nursing is a clinical degree, so the cost of studying it goes beyond tuition. When you receive your fee structure, check whether it lists these items separately:
- Accommodation, if you take a room on campus (KeMU keeps a separate accommodation account for government-sponsored students, which shows it is billed apart from tuition).
- Clinical placement costs. The BScN curriculum includes long hospital placements in units such as adult nursing, community health, paediatrics, mental health and critical care, and students often meet their own transport and upkeep during these rotations.
- Uniforms, a stethoscope and other practical kit.
- Medical cover and student activity charges.
- Nursing Council of Kenya fees for indexing, licensing exams and registration, which are paid to the council rather than the university.

Entry requirements for KeMU nursing
According to KeMU’s programme brochure, the requirements are:
- Direct Entry: KCSE (or equivalent) with a minimum mean grade of C+ and at least C+ in each of English or Kiswahili, Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Upgrade (In-Service): a Kenya Registered Nurse diploma or equivalent, a KCSE mean grade of C (or Division II), and at least two years of work experience in a health care institution.
Students applying through KUCCPS also need to meet the nursing cluster cut-off for the year. Our page on nursing cut-off points explains how those are set.
How to apply and get the official fee structure
- KUCCPS route: choose KeMU nursing during the KUCCPS application. Once placed, log in to the KeMU admissions portal with your KCSE index number, accept the offer, and download your admission letter, fee structure and joining instructions.
- Self-sponsored route: create an account on the KeMU online application portal, choose the BScN programme, attach a passport photo, your national ID (or birth certificate if under 18) and academic certificates, then pay the KSh 1,000 application fee. The portal gives Paybill 7528493 for application fees, with the applicant’s name as the account.
- Ask before you pay: if you need the fee figures before applying, call admissions on 0724 256 162 or email info@kemu.ac.ke and ask for the current BScN fee structure for your intake and mode of study.
If you are going through KUCCPS, our guide on how to apply for KUCCPS and choose courses walks through the portal.
How to pay KeMU fees
KeMU lists separate accounts for privately and government-sponsored students. Always use your full registration number (for example, BUS-1-1111-1/2011 in the university’s own sample) as the reference so the payment reaches your account.
